A rousing athletic meet is planned for Camp Greene for July 4th. A. E. Bergman, camp athletic director, is boosting the affair. The track and field events will be open to both offi cers and enlisted men. It is expected that the meet will be held on Wearn field. One of the features of the meet will be the litter bearers’ contest. The litter team will consist of three men; two bearers and one patient. At a given signal the litter bearers will start tor their patient and carry him back to their starting point.. It has been suggested teams be picked from the classes now in train ing here so that the base hospital may be represented and carry off the hon ors. Some of the other events will be: Fifty-yard dash, 100-yard dash, 2H0- yard dash, one-half mile run, running broad jump, running high jump, sema phore signalling, and relay race. SO WE ARE— There was a ball game played on last Saturday between a team represent ing The Base Hospital and the Fourth Re,giment Motor Mechanics. And the rooters for the respective teams Sat in separate sections of the Grand Stand. And when the game waxed fast and furious The rooters grew enthusiastic and vented Their enthusiasm hy hurling epi thets Complimentary and otherwise against their opponents. And the Base IJospital crowd called the Motor Mechanics “ground-hogs” and the “ground-hogs” Called the Base Hospital crowd “home-guards,” slackers, ’ And there were some civilians present of Draft Age An they quietly slunk away when the slacker question Was mentioned. And finally the “ground-hogs” ask ed us What we were, “Regulars or Na tional Army men?” And one of the “home-guards” re plied, “We are Regulars, God help us.” By SERGEANT COSGROVEv The base hospital team was defeat ed by the Fourth Regimental team at Weam Field on Saturday. The score was 11 to 3 and was caused no doubt by our boys being unaccustomed to the new field. It seemed that they were attacked with a case of stage fright, as the usual heavy hitting o” the team was missing. They also fielded in very poor style, eight errors being chalked up against them. An other game is in tnhe works at the present time and we all hope for a reversal of form. Barth, Craig and Zecha stood out as the shining light of the team. Jewell on first, played a wonderful game for the Fourth team. Bases on balls, IN ATHLETICS Among the records of the athletes at Camp Greene, Sgt, Nickerson holds one of the most enviable. Nick,” as a “has been,” is not surpassed by ‘Matty” or the “Iowa Parmer” when it comes to being a star. While a student at Rickel Institute, “Nick' earned his letter in three branches, baseball, basketball and football. In addition to being a member of the varsity teams in these branches ot athletics, he served two years as cap tain of the basketball and baseball teams. Pvt. Cy Green was for many years a leading soccer played with Alabama Thistles and his services were always in demand. BASEBALL BREVITIES. Well, We got tripped up. Better luck next time. “Dad” Craig caught a beautiful game, besides getting two hits. Zecha, of course, got his customary hits, two this time. We admit the Fourth has a dandy team, but we fully convinced that we can still beat them. Another game is in the works. « An item of amusement was the jeering of “Hug” Lange by the Weach- erites. It sort of got his goat, too. Joe Lawlor was on the bench. Ho wanted to go in as a pinch hitter but didn’t have on a suit, so he was barred. >i This party Jewell, seems destined for faster company. He is a wonder at first base, and it seems that he towered way above the other players, although they were all good. EVOLUTION OF KULTURED BILL Too much pennant in “Bob” Mar tin’s glove, we imagine. Take it out. Bob, take it out. Darwin was right either way you take it. SX I r
