SOL. SURPRISED. THE CADUCEUS. THEY FRY OUR EGGS Upon his return from a fifteen-day furlough Sgt. Laske was greatly sur prised to note the improvements that had taken place in his mess hall in his absence. A new electric washing machine has been installed which steams and cleanses the dishes very effectively and is a great source of enjoyment to the tired K. P.s. Also they have a fine large ice-chest and butcher room, that is quite an asset considering the conditions that they were compelled to work under previous to the erec tion of this addition to the kitchen. ■ Also there is a new eiectnc potatoe peeler .that is. not to be laughed at and an electric grinding machine that will grind everything or as Cook Bingham aptly put it, the machine will “even grind good from bad.” V. Talk about singing your way into any one’s heart. That is slim stufi: in comparison to the noble work that these brave boys have been doing, for they have literally COOKED their way into the hearts of every man of the enlisted force at the base hospital. These are the boys who have baked, and browned and sizzled in the unbearable heat of riie kitchen over the reddened stoves that we might have the high grade, properly cooked, remarkably seasoned food that we are favored with at the present time; Strange though, isn’t it, that hardly a man of the notable crew ever saw a stove before he joined the army? Among the cooks we have former stenographers, traveling salesmen, mechanics, lumbrmen, an unusually good bartender (so they tell us), a couple of good clerks, an ex-sailor and a former cigar manufacturer, the man who made Laske’s Clippings famous all over New England, our esteemed friend and mess sergeant Solomon J. Laske. The names of this most worthy aggregation, reading the top row from left to right are; Wright, VanTassell, Sergeant Laske, Lennix Scherbarth aand Pinkham. The second row from left to right: Tannreuther, Barnes, Butler, Western and Bingham. Bottom row: Westgate and Bauers.
