One evening while laying low in the pmpany street amidst the shrieks and howls of laughter made by the Slaves ot Coca Cola- in yonder Malamallot Canteen I fell to musing about the men and women I used to read about m books—you know such Thorough breds as Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Mark Anthony and Plato, who saved Historians from starvation? Did they possess the same ambitions when they were Yearlings that we did or did Fame come to them, Dr Mun- yon as it were. It is a queer question that has Bothered many men. Look down the Row of Ages when “Julie” Caesar blew his “Fat” Letaret B-Flat clarinet, why Beacon Fires immediately lighted the Midnight Sky, and hordes of Young Romans followed him to battle. On the way to the front they were cheered by every Developed and Undeveloped Chicken in the Borough who promised a Ruby Lip impression for every Scalp and what Wonderful Babies they were; they of the Scarlet Robes Wid Red Roses In Titian and Auburn hair, and what an appearance they must have made in those Marble Swimming Pool days when Rome was in her glory and Casual Camps were few. Now_ the first Act of our Drama IS ‘Julie” Caesar, a wonderful man if there ever was noe, a Cent who was as optimistic on the day the wind blew from the North as he was on the Day it blew from the South and was as steadfast in the Blast Furnace of War as he was watching the Wednes day Evening production of the Pass ing Show at the Colliseum. His vic tories in the field show us that in his opinion the Man who would pass up the Blessed Privilege of Dodging Shrapnel was Seven Degrees lower than the Beasts of the Field, in other words “One crowned hour of glorious life was better than an age without a name.” The Second Act of our Drama finds us dealing with that Lily,of the Nile, Cleopatra. Here was a 100 per cent Tessie who was never addicted to Bantering with Bella Donna or Mary Garden Rouge, and say, a Regular John Drew for Detail and what few gowns her stately figure carried were enough to make Lady Duff Gordon weep with envy and “Shades of Sherry!” What Week-End Parties she showed the Pop ulace? There were no waits between the Halves to hear how the Persians and the Romans were threatening to put a McAdoo under the Nile. Every body just slippel on his or her Fe^ Bag and dove Into the Wild Roast Boar amid the Sipping of Rare Vint age and clinking of Pearl and Glided Ornaments. Cleo never declared War On Prohibition, she was always strong for the Open Season on Julep? Her life was chuck full of Dlsappolnt- pointments and Poignant Grief, but like the Lady she was she Just bit her lips and enjoyed the Sweet Reprieve that Youth and Beauty had given her and when eDath claimed her limbs it was with the feeling that It “Was better to love and lost than never to have loved at all. The Next Character is no other than Plato the Sage who said, “Trees and Fields tell me nothing, Men are my Teachers ’ \' fccii ‘hi,- .Philosopher arose with Ma ^,ript io hand why all the Lansings, mingled with the Chariot Racers, Orrin Dealers and i-requenters of Mcs.-; Lunch Rooms. When he lisped forth Words of Wis dom it was mo.ant for the Statesmen as well as for every Kelly Pool player in the Kingdom, and how they did inhale R and amid cries of “Long Live our Gold Plato.” he would stand there amid th e Classical Background, as cool a.s Do -tor Williams boosting his Pink Pills for Pale People,” and Plato certainly made history for he went down to his grave one of the Best Foresight Babies in bis day. The closing Act introduces a rare figure, the gifted and talented Mark Anthony, the Jack Norworth whom . the Jane’s raved over and said pretty things about and when he strode about the Evening Streets he attracted at tention because he was the Favorite Suitor of Cleopara, and why this match was not succesful -was due to the Gossip and Gas Attacks that were spread around about the Couple, but History says Mark Fell down in the Pinch and by doing so Snodgrassed himself out of the Series. But then who will ever forget his Funeral Spiel oerv the body of Caesar. You know there are some Dominies who can’t get worked up unles sthey see a lot of Flowers and Silver Handles, but Mark -w'ent out and got the Weeps by his flow of Gush. He knew what Caesar had done. He knew that Caesar did more in his short life than aU the Old Fossils did in their 80 odd years. Mark knew that he was a Regular Fel- Fellow and he held that a Warrior who kissed the Queen and then faced the Enemy -was Hundreds of Years ahead of the Mebbes who would stand without being hitched. So that is why Mark said “I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.” And thus we end the Review of a Quartette who worked on the Same Bill and were encored heavily. But that was long ago, Citizens, and things have changed since then, hut could you blame me for thinking of those Days when Rome was in her Glory and Casual Camps were few.
