Highest tribute is paid to the faith
ful services of the retired Surgeon
Gene"al of the army, General Gorgas
in the following letter of commenda
tion frorh Secretary of War Baker and
which letter the friends of General
Gorgas at Camp Greene have re
quested The Caduceus to publish;
My Dear Gen. Gorgas;
Your official term as Surgeon Gen-
e’-al of the army having expired, I
beg leave to express to you the app"e-
ciation of the army and the country
of the distinguished services which
you have rendered during your long
and brilliant career as a medical
officer. Even the gracious modesty
which is a part of your habit of
thought can not keep you from realiz
ing that your career has been one of
b’-il'iant distinction, and that the
Medical Department of the army has
profited from your services, as it has
been honored by your deservedly high
reputation. The operation of law has
te miinated your period of active ser
vice. except for the emergency work
which you I are now doing under my
direction, but it will be a source of
satisfaction to me and a comfort to
the people of the country to realize
that your interest will continue in the
armv and in the great scientific re
searches in which your life has been
engoged. ,, , .
If I may add-a perzonal word to this
note, I beg you to accept my grateful
acknowledgement of the cordial and
helpful relation which have existed
between us officially, and to thank
you for the many personal courtesies
and kindnesses which I have received
from you during our most happy asso-
siation.
lam placing a copy of this letter in
the hands of The Adjutant General in
order that it may become a part of
your record in the department, and
may there 'remain as an evidence of
the complete success with which you
as a soldier and a doctor have through
long years and under varying and
difficult conditions served your coun
try.
Cordially, yours,
NEWTON D. BAKER,
Secretary of War.

LIFE IS BUT A GAME OF CARDS
Our life is biit a game of cards.
As each one ha sto learn;
Each shuffier cute and deals the cards,
And each his trumps docs turn.
Some times a high card to the top,
While other turn a low;
Some hold a hand quiiss flush with trumps,
While others none ca.. show.
, When hearts are trumps, we play for love
And pleasure decks tne hour;
No thought of sorrow cnecks our joy
In friendship’s rosy bower.
When diamonds chance to crown the deck,
’Tis then men stake their gold;
Large sums are often won and lost.
By gamblers young and old.
But when clubs are trumps look out for wa»
On ocean and on land;
For horrid deeds are sometimes done.
When clubs are in the hand.
But the rist game of all is the spade
Which is turned by the hand of time:
’Tis he who finishes up each' game,
In every land and clime.
No matter how much each may lose.
Or how much each may save.
You’ll find the spade will turn up at laS,.
And dig each player’s grave.
