OFFICERS WHO WERE WOUNDED “OVER THERE.”
When the warriors for Justice rushed against the steel-built war ma
chine of Germany, these are the men who blew the whistles and led the
charge of the daring sons of freedom. These oiflcers were halted in the
midst of the drive but not until they had delivered some effective work for
Democracy’s cause.
The names of the men, standing from left to right, are—Lieutenant
Robert Riley, Lieutenant James Swain, of Company D, 115th Infantry;
Captain Ives, surgeon in charge of the Officers ward of the U. S. Army
Base Hospital, Camp Greene; Lieutenant L. D. Sutherland, of 405 South
Tryon street, Charlotte; Lieutenant William H. Dunn, Company K, 119th
Infantry; Lieutenant Jack New'man, Company D, 105th Engineers; Seated
is Lieutenant Z. B. Thornburg, of Concord, Company D, 118th Infantry.
PAL O’ MINE
BY JOE LAWLOR.
Once upon a Time I knew a Youth
named Tommy Bayes. He had seen
20 summers and was as full of lifet as
Ponce De Leon’s Fountain. The na
tives admired the lad because he pack
ed red blood and still realized what
the great tragedy at Mount Calvary
did for the human race. If there ever
was a Kid blessed with the Good things
of life here was one. Lapped in lux
ury and still not spoiled, anything
was his for the asking. Riches meant
nothing in his life, his motto always
being, “I wonder how the other guy
is.” A rare being sayeth you in this
age, but I swear, pardner, it’s the
truth.
Often he used to wander down to
the city bridge in the cool of the
“eben” and watch the toilers mingle
alter a hard day with the eternal
grind and while they smoked their
pipe of peace he would mix with them
and hear their philosophy of life.
In August, 1914, when the demon
war spread its clutches over Europe
and father was torn from Mother,
brother from sister, Julian from
Louise, etc. Tommy took on a seri
ous mein. “Why should Belgium be
pillaged,” said he. Why should the
blue bird of happiness be destroyed
