Friday, November 10, 1939 THE POINTER Page Three Bridge Over Bi-Weekly Bison Sports Green Wave! 4 — SPORTS TO OATE By Bus Overcash Students!!!—There’s some ru mor going around this school of ours that this edition of our Black Bison has the best chance a High Point eleven has ever had to win the Western conference. To answer a question of this nature, one has to spectulate. — Our Black Bi son have the best chance a High Point High School eleven has I ever had to win the West ern Conference. I^ast year the Bison made a strong bid for conference honors—and were barely nosed out by the Purple Whirlwind from Greensboro. The Bison and the Whirlwind and the strong team from Winston-Salem are all striving, in a close race, to win the conference champion ship. Neither has been defeated, all three have been tied. The Bison have to tangle with two more conference opponents, the Green Wave from Gastonia, and the Reynolds High team from Winston-Salem—considered one of the strongest teams of the south— by virture of their 13-0 defeat of Charlotte. Charlotte defeated Greensboro 26-9 and High Point '7-6. and Winston-Salem defeated Charlotte—so the experts will pick the Winston-Salem footbal lers over the Whirlwind. High Point is given an even chance with the aggregation from the “tobacco” city, by virtue of their outplaying the Charlotte crew. One thing that is in favor of the Bison is—beating Winston- Salem in their own back yard is considered improbable, and Greens boro encountei’s Winston in Winston-Salem, while the Bison tangle with the Deamon team on the Millis Stadium gridiron, where the have only lost two games in the past two years. Warning Footballers!!! don’t take this crew from Gastonia too lightly for Winston only beat them by 14 points. Bison—remem ber games are lost by over con fidence !! GASTONIA GAME PLAYED UNDER OLE SOL G’boro Leads Race; Bisons Close Second The Western Conference race will reach its climax this and next week when the undefeated j leaders will come to the top to meet the stronger teams of their own calibre. High Point’s Black Bison are now in second place sharing it respectively with Reynolds High of Winston Salem. The reason for the Bison being in the runner up spot is not because they are be hind but because they have not played as many conference games as the Purple Whirlwind of Greensboro. The Greensboro ag gregation is credited with two i and one half wins against one iialf loss that being to High . Point when the Bison tied the favored team from the Gate City 0-0. Reynolds High is in the saniK ' position as High Point since they have won one, tied one, and lost none. This is a very close race and the championship hinges on •who wins the Black Bison-Wins- ton Salem Game and the Rey nolds High-Greesboro game. That is, of course, assuming that the Bison defeat the Green Wave oi Gastonia which seems likely, since Greensboro defeated them so handily. The standings: Greensboro won 2, lost V2. High Point won IV2. lost %. Winston-Salem won IV2, lost V2. Salisbury won V2, lost IV2. Gastonia won 0, lost 3. GIRLS’ SPORTS Pause... Refresli The High Point Girls Physical Educational Department made a good showing at the annual play day held in Greensboro at Wo mans College, Saturday, October, 23. For more heated competition the girls were divided into two teams, the reds and the blues. The Reds dominated the day when they defeated the Blues in most events. However the Blues were not to be downed without a fight no contest was by any means one-sided. Each .girl participating in these events was awarded 25 points to ward her school letter. The Girl’s Intramural soccer schedule, which was interrupted by the teacher’s convention, will be resumed as usual. However games to have been played Octo ber 31st Room 302 vs 101 will be played November 13 and 14 respectively. SOCCER PLAYERS FINISH j SUCCESSFUL SCHEDULE BIG GUN ON BISON LINE Powerful High Point Gridmen Meet Conference Rivals The Green Wave of Gastonia will pay host to the Black Bison tonight in the Cotton City as the two strong aggregations meet in a Western Conference clash. The locals are at full power for the tilt except for several svar linemen who are suffering from injuries. Charles Kimsey and Clifton P’urgurson are both on the slightly sick list and it is doubt ful whether either of these boys will make the lineup tonight. In spite of this fact the coach ing staff is not worried since Coaches Scott and Stevens intend to give the reserves their long waited-for chance tonight. The backfield is needing a rest badly as is the line that has performed so well this year and it is hoped that they will get their reprieve fi'om service tonight. This contest is very important in the Western Conference since it will determine whether the Bison will be in for the payoff honors that will come next week when the season winds up. Last year the Bison scoi’ed on the foui'th play of the game and after that the High Poin reserves had it pretty much their own way with the Green Wave and it is hoped and expected that a repe tition will be staged tonight. “Bud” Kivett, a dependable receiver and a brilliant defensive end, will be off the sick list for the encounter of the Green Wave this afternoon. Cradle Mob Undefeated Coca-Cola Bottling- Co. Of High Point j The. Black Bison soccer team has just about finished a fairly successful season. The locals opened their season against Allen Jay and defeated them decisively. They followed this -win with two more in quick succession and then the Bison felt a little slump and lost two straight. However, taking things as a whole the locals enjoyed a pretty good season. The one team that always gives them a thorough fit is the Jamestown aggregation that never fails to make a strong bid for the state championship. The neighboring team is still in the fight and it looks like they maj' be the state champs. They defeated the Bison twice during the season and it seemed they had the Bison’s number. The Baby Black Bison still re main undefeated in midget com petition although they lost one contest last week to the Mills Home reserves and won another midget ball game fi'om the Bear Cubs of Mt. Airy. In Mt. Airy the Little Bison had a hard time and could only score in the last two minutes of play. The final tally was 7-0 for High Point but the Cubs had the ball on the High Point four yard line when the game ended, so hard did the home team fight for a score in the dying moments of the game. The “Cradle Mob” went to Thomasville Friday morning and played the Little Baptists re serves. The Bisonettes were badly outweighed and had to fight hard to hold the Mills Home boys to a 13-0 victory. This is the best midget team that High Point High has ever produced and most of the credit must be given to head Coach Tony Cernugel and his able assistant Coach “Gil” Reid. Attend Duke Meeting- On October school seniors 31 several High were invited by Ml'. T. C. Kirkman to attend a Duke Alumni Banquet at the Sheraton Hotel. After dinner Dr. Green, dean of English at Duke gave a very mteresting talk. Following Dr. Green’s talk, a moving picture of the Duke-Pitt football game was shown which was enjoyed by all. A Cinch Bet That INGRAM’S WILL HAVE YOUR FAVORITE SODAS AND FAVORITE COSMETICS SADIE HAWKINS DAY Sadie Hawkin’s Day has almost been accpted as a national holi day, but one day this week in the cafeteria certain teachers in the school almost took pi’ovidence it self in their hands when they declared their willingness to have such a holiday. One teacher even went so far as to suggest that there be two such holidays dur ing the school year—for teachers only, of course—so that failure to make a successful catch the first time might mean the use of bet ter bait the second trip.
