Page Four THE POINTER Friday, November 10, 1939 Avon Players to Present‘d As You Like Here CAST INCLUDES PROMINENT ACTORS FROM STAGE AND SCREEN PRODUCTIONS Will Plav To Play Here Soon Students and patrons of High Point will have an opportunity to witness an excellent presenta tion of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, “As You Like It,” when the Avon Players, nationally known classic company, appear in the High School auditorium on Nov. 24. k’iguring prominently in the cast of the Avon Players are well-known personalities of stage, .screen, and radio that Joseph Setman, director, has gathered from such key cities as Los An geles, New York, Chicago, and Hollywood. Assuming the loading role of Rosalind will be Carol Hill, who was featured as leading lady with Charles Winnenger on the nationally acclaimed “Sho-vv Boat” radio program. Miss Hill is ap pearing with the Avon Players this season for the first time, having previously been feature as leading lady with Charles Win nenger on the nationally acclaim ed “Show Boat” radio program. Miss Hill is appearing with the Avon Players this season for the first time, having previously fea tured on the legitims stage with such j)ersonalities as Michael Whalen. Scott Tennyson, romantic juvenile, will play Orlando in “As You Like It” to be presented here. Previously, Mr. Tennyson has appeared at the Blackstone Theatre in Chicago as leading man in class repetoire. Admission will 1k> ,5c. MISS eloTseIest APPOINTED ADVISER POINTER YESTERDAY Miss Eloise Best, member of the English department, will as sume the duties of Pointer facul ty adviser Monday. She will succeed Mr. Cameron D. Deans who is leaving the high school faculty to take up duties as boys’ commissioner. Miss Best is a graduate of High Point high school and during her undergraduate years was an ac tive member of the Pointer staff. She attended High Point Col lege where she majored in Eng lish and served as a leading mem ber of “The Hi-Po” staff. Carol Hill, glamorous leading lady, who will be featured as Rosalind in the Avan Playrs’ pro duction of “As You Like It” to be presented here soon. GIRL RESERVES HOLD ANNUAL MEETING TODAY The Girl Reserves held their annual recognition servics in the auditorium this morning. Each year these services are held so that the old members can renew their pledge and new ones take it for the first time. Mull Lutz and Uonree Setzer presided at the services. Annie Louise Brown began the program by reading the scripture and leading the group in prayer. Donree Setzer talked on the purpose of the organization, and Mull Lutz explained the meaning of the recognition services. Dot Price told the group what the Girl Reserve symbol means. At the conclusion of these talks the group repeated the Girl Reserve Code. The Gild Reserves sang “Following the Gleam,” which accompanied the lighted torch ceremony. A trio composed of Elizabeth Teague, Rachel Hunt, Annie Louise Brown, sang after the torch ceremony. The program concluded with a talk by Miss Susanne Thomas, the Girl Reserve secretary. JOE GIVEN LOSES IN STATE ELECTION BETA CLUB DRAWS PLANS FOR YEAR Pointer Adviser (Continued from page one) discussions of the problems back ing student councils and pupils all over the state. Climaxing the meeting was the football game between the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State College at Kenan Stadium in which Carolina won 17-0. Attending from High Point were: Cecil Prince, Joe Given, Mull Lutz, Thurman Homey, Mary I.(Ou Cecil, Gene Thacker, Eleanor Younts, Ruth Culler, Ho ward Forrest with Miss Louise Hunter and Mr. Sam Smith, fac ulty advisers. Steve Clark attended wih the delegation filming the meeting for the H. P. H. S. Newsreel. The local chapter of the Na tional Beta Club held its second meeting on November 7. This was an important business meeting in which discussion covered not only plan for the year but present obligations, dues, and fees. To relieve Ava Neil Taylor of being both secretary and treasur er, Posy Redman was selected to take over the duties of treasurer. A committee was appointed to find all possible records of the Beta Club from last year. A background from previous years was found desirable since a new start has been made this year with new members and a new spon.sorer. Members of this com mittee are Posy Redman, Marie Snider, and Irene Meekins, as chairman. It was further decided that all fees should be paid at once in lieu of an induction ceremony at the next meeting. To have charge of this meeting and to act as regular program committee, the president appointed Ella Lou Taylor, Max Collins, and Marie Snider, with Ella Lou Taylor as chairman. Although meetings will be held regularly, once a month it was decided to have the induction service this month on November 22. Miss Eloise Best will succeed Mr. Cameron D. Deans as the Pointer faculty adviser. GLEE CLUB IN NEW ROOM The old band i-oom under the stage had been reconditioned and sound-proofed for use by the glee club. New seats and equipment have brought to the chorus room.
