Victorious ? ? — our Black JTO f Bison crew tan- gle with the strong club | |r * from Winston-' Salem tonight on the Minis Stadium gridiron. Will they, and can they be victor ious??? The question that is now arising in the minds of all our sports-minded pupils is whether the Bison will defeat the Black Demons of Winston-Salem, and if they do—will they play Greens boro a post-season game, or will a coin be tossed to see who will represent the West in the state finals at Chapel Hill?? We’ll let the decision of that question rest in the hands of the conference officials—while ■ our thoughts will be pointing toward a Black Bison victory over that tough team from Winston-Salem. From all reports of the game played between Greensboro and' J ixt ll Winston-Salem last Friday night | OlSdlCtlGS JlillCl WCll —the “Tobacco-City” eleven has Played Year Of Wins one of the best balanced teams : that the Bison have encountered all season. From the rumors go ing around this place of “study” this sports writer gathers into the “brain” that is situated in that thing resting on his shoulders, that the Bison can beat this Winson-Salem gang, if they go onto the field and play heads-up, and smart football all the way, and not let down for one second. Rumors are that if the Bison let down — this « Ilin " r> I^ISON HOPE TO UPSET Basketball rractice Cagers Begin Drills On Wednesday Nite The pivot man, Herbert Speas, oi whose shoulders rests the clickin I of the Bison defense and the un clicking of the Demon thrusts tonight. Coach Scott reports that all his boys are in good condition for the fracas, with the exception of Clifton Furgurson, who is still on the sidelines because of an ankle injury sustained in the Charlotte affair. Furgurson, it is hoped, will be able to give his services, if absolutely necessary. BI!10N AND TO BE HONORED SOON Varsity Bison power. One of the most valuable play ers that will come up next year is Egbert Culler, star fullback for the Baby Bison. He will make a strong bid for the place left open by the graduation of Thur man Homey. Others who are expected to try for varsity honors next year; J. C. McAllister, Roy Culler, and little Donald Dunkle- berger. Jamestown Clinches Soccer Championship Coach A. J. Simeon announced last Tuesday that candidates for the 1940 edition of the Black Bi son basketball team will start practice Tuesday afternoon. A special invitation is sent to all boys who have been out for basketball previusly to take part in the nightly practices starting Wednesday. Two practice sessions will be held daily, one in the afternoon for beginners, and one at night for the boys who have previously been out for basketball. Coach Simeon, director of ever successful Bison basketball teams for the past three years, will face the problem of replacing Dick Hartley, highest scoring forward in the Western Confer ence last season. Forming the nucleus of the Bi son basketball team for the com ing season are expected to be: Lewis Hayworth and Thurman H,orney, guards. Jack Hussey, center, and little Darrell Welborn, forward; with Hayworth and Welborn captaining the crew. Coach Simeon stated that he expected strong rivalry to exist between the past varsity men and the up-coming members and in some cases, the up-coming play ers might gain the coveted posi tion as a regular, if the varsity men don’t keep awake and hust le. A large group of boys have been practicing in the gymnasium for the past two weeks, and Coach Simeon stated that he expected a large number of fellows to report for the bi-daily practices, start ing next week. Last Friday afternoon the Black Bison journeyed to Gas tonia where they met and de feated the Gastonia Green Wave in an important Western Con ference encounter 33-0. The locals scored early in the ; first quarter when Captain Brant- little! ley Hucks took a punt from the toe of Gastonia’s triple threat fullback Jordan and ran it back seventy yards for a Bison touch down. The scores followed in quick succession and all the High Point players did a mighty fine job. The spectators were thrilled to see all of the reserves who have worked hard all the year but sel dom have the opportunity to play, get into action and acquit them selves very well. Winston-Salem - 1V2 11/2 Salisbury 1V2 21/2 Gastonia 0 4 The Western Conference race will close tonight with the play ing of the High Point-Reynolds high football game. As things now stand the Pur ple Whirlwind of Grensboro is on top of the loop with High Point in second place. Winston- Salem is positively out of the race since they have been debited with 1 and one half losses. If High Point can beat the Black Demons tonight, they will be tied for first place with Greensboro. According to the conference rules when such a situation arises, the two tied teams flip a coin to see who will go to Chapel Hill and represent the West against the champions of the East. This rule does not leave the other deadlocked team out of the picture. If the team from the West should win in th champion ship battle at Chapel Hill, then the other team has the right to challenge the champions to a post-season game to determine the final championship. If the winner at Chapel Hill refuses the challenge then they automatical ly forfeit the championship. The Standings; The Black Bison football aggre gation will meet the powerful Reynolds high team at 8 o’clock in Albion Millis Stadium in a con test that may decide the champ ionship of the Western Confer ence. Last week the Bison kept their conference record spotless by de feating the Green Wave of Gas tonia, and this week the locals will battle the once beaten and once tied Reynolds high. In spite of the fact that the Wins ton-Salem fighters have been de feated they are considered quite potent opponents for the Bison. The Invaders boast one of the finest fullbacks in North Caro lina, in the person Phil Brewer. It has been said by teams that have met the Black Demons that the only way to beat the boys from the “Tobacco City” is to stop Phil Brewer in his tracks. This is what the Bison intend to do and at the same time they will be marching down the field with all the offensive power in their possession. Coach Scott has given the whole Bison powerhouse a thorough working over and all the facilities will be at their best. The players who at the first of the week were injured, are now in tip-top shape for the tussel. A capacity crowd is expected for the fray, and the Bison are determined tp put up a stiff fight for the game and conference honors. The Bison will lose Hussey, Furgerson, Speas, C. Kimsey, M. C. Kimsey, Bill Simmons, Carl Justice from the line this year.
