Wednesday, November 29, 1939 THE POINTER Page Three Good Luck Bi-Weekly Bison Sports Basketeers SPORTS TO DATE By Bus Overcash Bison Cagers Practice Nightly Football ? ■— No — practi cally all the football players don’t like to hear you men- this pastime to them, for that S defeat that was handed them by HlljL that “lucky” ’I* ^ ^' reensboro club really hurt. We wonder what all the foot ball boys will be doing- now that their job has ended. Some will be loafing, some working, while others will be trying their hand at basketball. Basketball is here at last!!! For a long time, a certain group of Liys has been waiting for this time to come. For the past two seasons the Bison have come close to winning Western Con ference laurels, but for some reason have not done so—why? last year, the basketball team came within two- points of win ning the Western Conference championship, and the football team of 1940 came within two points of winning the conference. What is wrong with this??? Is it bad luck??? Last year, when the basketball team lost out to Charlotte by a two-point margin, three of the varsity “quint” play ed the game, although they were sick, and should have been in bed. Injuries hampered the foot ball team Friday night and as a result they lost. Is this a jinx??? It seems that a jinx hampers our athletic teams most when they are meeting stiff op position. Will this jinx follow our 1940 edition of the Black Bison basketball quintets ? ? ? All we can say is, we’ll be watching to see. Coach Simeon should have a TEAM representing this school of ours, that we will all be proud of; for he has all the material at hand that he had last season, when he came so close to cop ping the conference laurels. The only serious trouble that Coach Simeon will have will be to re place Richard Hartley, team high scorer last season. Hussey, L. Hayworth, Welborn, and Homey will probably be on the starting team, due to their vast amount of experience, while heated rival ry will persist among the re mainder of the candidates for the position of fifth man on this quintet. Varsity Mentor Coach A. J. Simeon will agair take charge of the Black Bison basketeers. Coach Simeon has beeni highly successful in his coaching, taking second place in the conference race for two years. ALL STARS! Brantley Hucks, Thurman Hor- ney, and Jack Hussey were in vited after the R. J. Reynolds game by Henry Bartos, line coach, and Chuck Errickson, backfield coach for Carolina, to visit the University of North Carolina today and tomorrow. While there they will be shown around the campus and will meet the football players. Dan Hill, once famous center for Duke University, was at the game, also, scouting our Black Bison. This was the second time he has eyed the crashing Bison at their best. Mi X, Attention, Girls Be economical in your haii styling and prepare for the holiday season by Calling THE SHERATON BEAUTY SHOP Black Bison Honored By Local Civic Clubs The gridiron banquet to be held at the Sheraton Hotel De cember 4, to honor the Bison squad and coaches is fast taking shape as the tickets are going fast with a sell-out in sight. Last year the Bison were hon ored at such a banquet for the fine grade of football that they played all through the season, and since they bettered their season this year, the citizens, that are backing the public spirited move, are going to re peat the honor. Mr. Frank Sizemore, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, and Soc Chakales, sports editor of the High Point Enterprise, are the leading members of the host of sponsors. All that is necessary to become a sponsor is to purchase one of the tickets that are now on sale. The proceeds will go to pay for the expenses of the meal and the rest will be divided into parts so as to make a little solid mercenary contribution to the pecuniary status of the coaches’ poeketbooks. When will the All-State teams be officially announced ? Will the Black Bison be represented? We surely think that some of the Blask Bison men should be on the list. COMPLIMENTS Of Hunter Coal Co. Tough Schedule Faces Basketeers Practicing under the lights of the high school gymnasium, the Black Bison basketball candidates are preparing for a tough sche dule. Coach A. J. Simeon announced last Monday that the 1940 Bison quintet would tangle with the hard-wood pounders of Hazel wood Boys’ Club from Hazelwood, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Games with Durham, Carolina state champions for ’39, and other out- of state teams are pending. Nightly practices are being used for the varsity candidates so that the “boys” can get more from their work, and not be bothered by spectators, according to Coach Simeon. Invitations were sent to approximately twenty-five boys to report for these nightly sessions. Coach “Gil” Reed will take charge of all underclassmen in afternoon practices. A junior varsity club will be formed of these candidates. The junior varsity will com pete with all class A conference and some consolidated schools. In the preliminaries preceeding the varsity contests, the junior var sity will probably play the junior varsity of the team that the var sity will encounter later in the evening. Conditioning, passing, and drib bling will be the main exercises that Coach Simeon will stress for the next week or two, al though there is an effort being made to schedule two or three games before the Chi’istmas holidays. Among the boys reporting for practice are some of last year’s varsity: Darrell Welborn, Lewis Hayworth, Jack Hussey, Abie Short, and James Haworth. Miss ing from the practices for the past day or so is Thurman Hor- ney, varsity guard, recovering from football injuries. Jr. Varsity Coach Captain Brantley Hucks and big Jack Hussey were selec ted by an opposing coach, Tom Young of Lexington, to represent High Point High School in the All-Star game to be held in Charlotte, Dec. 9. Coach “Gil” Reed, line coach of the Baby Bison, will be the tutor for the Jr. varsity basketball team. Coach Reed’s team will encounter Jr. varsity teams of Western confrence class A schools along with several consolidated schools. GRIDMEN WIN! Two Bison squads met yester day afternoon in a soccer con test. The powerful Bison foot ball team went out of its line and defeated the soccer team 3-2. Kivett, Wagner, and Char lie Kimsey smashed the ster ling defense of the soccer team to score the three football team’s goals. Hai’ry Land played his usual good game for the soccer squad. Wrestlers Prepare For Tough Season The “grunt and groan” artists of High Point High School start ed their preparations for the coming season last Monday under the tutledge of Coach “June” Scott. The wrestlers have reported for work, and have been taking light exercises in preparation for the hard and strenuous “work outs” that they have to take later in the season. Coach Scott has available the entire ’39 wrestling team, with the exception of Johnnie Miller and Bill Loflin, who were lost to the ’40 team by graduation. Six lettei'men are reporting for the daily practices and a try for this year’s team. These letter- men are: Bill Graham, “Rook” Sappenfield, state champion, Hale Hardee, David Barker, and two of the Kimsey caln, Charles and Purcell. There is a flock of prospective newcomers making a bid for berths of this ’40 westling team. They are Herbert Speas, Lloyd Jackson, Jim Smith, Bill Taylor, Ansell Snow, and Arthur Utley. With all these lettermen and newcomers reporting for woi'k. Coach Scott should be able to build an efficient and successful team. The Black Bison “grap- plers” meet such teams as Thom- asville, Greensboro, Salisbury, and there is a probability of meets with Mt. Airy and Durham. After the current season is over. Coach Scott will send a team to Duke to represent High Point in the State meet. Conference Ends; Whirlwind Beat Bison INTRAMURAL SPORTS Basketball is the main sport that is being stressed in the physical education classes. Under the direction of A. J. Simeon, Athletic Director, the physical education classes are being taught the fundamentals of basketball, the purpose being to build basketball material for the teams of the years to come. Passing and dribbling are be ing stressed at present in the classes. Shooting will come later in the season. Screen-blocking and other such fundamentals will be taught so as to give the sophomores every chance to be come basketball players. N. H. SILVER CO. 129 South Main Street For Smart Styled Young Fellows’ Clothes With the losing of the game to Greensboro last week the Bi son ended the Western Confer ence football competition this year. T’he fight for the champion ship was a hard one and the Purple Whirlwind had one ol the toughest struggles for the championship that they have had in several years. This was the second consecutive year that the Whirlwind has won conference title and the right to represent the West in Chapel Hill against the champions of the East. The Whirlwind has already de feated both of the leaders in the East. Durham and Raleigh were deadlocked for Eastern Con ference honors but Rocky Mount defeated Raleigh and so Greens boro will meet the powerful Durham Bulls that defeated the Bison 10-0 early in the season. The victor will be proclaimed state champion. Betty Jo Hedrick, Mrs. Sime on’s little sister, was seen crying broken-heartedly after the game Friday night.
