Friday, December 15, 1939 THE POINTER Page Five BiSON, BEAT Bi-Weekly Bison Sports BOLLDQGS SPOBTS TO DATE Guest Columnist Marvin Grant Greetings, students of this fine institution,, and readers of The Pointer. It is once again my plea sure to write my opinion of the athletic program of High Point ; high school. I Basketball is | undoubtedly the | sport in the limelight at the present. How- [ ever, do not let j this one sport j crowd out do the other ath- eltic activities going on at the same time. Wrestling will also supply fun for those who are interested in this sport. Coach Simeon will probably pro duce one of the greatest teams on the hardwood floor this year that he has ever had during his coaching at High Point. Led by co-captains “Haiti” Welborn and j Lewis Hayworth, and three other i lettermen. Coach Simeon can start a team of all lettermen. These two captains will be greatly aided by Jack Hussey, Thurman Hor- ney and “Abie” Short, all mem ber of last year’s first squad. A fine supply of reserves from last year’s squad will be ready to fill in at anytime necessary. These include James Hayworth, “Face” Evans, Jack Preston, James Kiv- ett, Jake Steele, Floyd Taylor, Herbert Speas, and a host of others from the white and midget teams. A great deal of discussion about this year’s team, and its success has been centered around the loss of Dick Hartley, last year’s lead ing scorer. The Bison will miss Hartley, I believe, but there is always some one ready to fill in at any vacancy. However, this will be hard to do in Hai'tley’s place, but the experience of the others will aid the Bison greatly. All in all the cagers should en joy a successful season, and pro bably a conference championship and a good chance to overthrow Durham’s reign over the hard wood in this state. However, boys, do not let this go to your head, because yu have a hard season ahead of you; so let’s get down to business and show the other teams that High Point is still to be considered in basketball before a champion is chosen. Don’t forget the wrestlers this year, either. They really should have some of the limelight. Bill (Continued On Page Six) BISON SLATE OPENS MONDAY ' --- —- -- — - Wrestlers Practice Steadily Basketeers Meet Bulldogs Monday The Black Bison basketball team of High Point high school will open their toughest schedule in many a year Tuesday night when they encounter the basket ball quintet from Burlington. Coach Simeon has been drilling his boys every night since the starting of the season, in order to prepare them for the tough schedule ahead. The Bison still have many faults to correct, one of which is the roughness exhibi ted in their passing attack. Now that football season is over and Coach Simeon has avail able all of his material, the rug gedness and roughness of the passing and shooting and funda mentals of basketball will be ironed out in a few days. The Black Bison quint will engage such teams as the Hazle- wood Boys’ club of Pennsylvania, the Carolina freshmen, and pro bably the frosh from State Col lege. Big Jack Hussey, back from the All-star game in Charlotte, is getting into the “swing” of it all, now that he is getting in the practices. Coach Simeon’s club has been slowed down in their practice sessions for the simple reason they needed a center who could capably hold down the pivot posi tion. The probable starting five for the encounter Tuesday night will be Welborn and Short or J. Hay worth at forwards, Hussey, cen ter; L. Hayworth and H. Homey or Speas at the guard positions. The Jr. Varsity coach “Gil” Reed is trying to arrange a game for his club, to be played as a preliminary to the varsity game. Jan. 12 Gastonia Here Jan. 19 Salisbury There Jan. 23 R. J. In order to get in good con dition for the tough schedule that is in store for them, the Bi son grapplers will give up part of their holiday pleasures in or der to be capable of meeting and vanquishing several of their opposing teams. Coach Scott’s boys will have available to them the high school gymnasium. One of the toughest and most promising schedules of the his tory of wrestling in High Point high school is being made out for the Black Bison. The Bison will tangle with the teams from Greensboro, Thomasville, Salis bury, Mt. Airy, Durham, with other meets pending. Coach Scott will send a team to the State meet. Hackney Heads Basketball School Diminutive Darrell Welborn, high scoring forward, around whom a large part of the Bison scoring punch centers will aid Lewis Hayworth in forming the Bison general staff this year. Lewis Hayworth outstanding defensive man on last year’s squad is expected to uphold the terrific reputation he built up this season. He co-captains this years championship-pound quint. Thurman Homey, still recuper ating from a leg injury sustained in the Greensboro game, will be held out of the Bison basketball scrimmages and hard work until after the gala holidays. Pause... Refresh Welborn, dimunitive forward rung the hoop for 15 of the Bi son’s 32 points. Little Welborn virtually stole the show from his fellow teammates. Sappenfield, Adams-Millis center scored 11 of the “A’s” 33 points. Mr. Bunn Hackney and Dolan Hedrick, North State officials, have been, for the past day or so, conducting a basketball school. Under the supervision of the two officials, the High Point Black Bison basketball prospects have been taking lessons on the interpretation of basketball rules. The rules have been explained in detail and have been drawn on the blackboard. The rule “ses sions” been held in room 101. l.ast Tuesday afternoon the basketball candidates were given a written examination on the basketball rules.
