Long, long ago in the heart of Mexico there lived an Aztec maiden and a youth who were deeply in love with each other. The Aztece, however, had a custom which each year brought great grief to some of the people. In order to appease their gods they re sorted to human sacrifice, and in the month of December they selected one of the most perfect of their young men and offered him as a.relig ious sacrifice. At this particular time the choice fell upon the girl’s lover, and in spite of the pleas of both families, the youth wae led to a spot high up on the side of the mountain and there slain. Weeping beside the dead form of her lover, the maiden begged for something of him which she could keep. Then a priest lifted up the bleeding heart 6f the youth, and as he did so, one bright red drop fell upon a little weed growing beside the road. Its color rapidly spread over the top of the plant, taking the shape of the flower we now know as the poinsettia. In the years ' that followed the girl treasured as a symbol, a gift from the gods, and each December the reddened leaves brought back to her thoughts of the lover she had lost. “I have always thought of Christmas as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, and pleasant time; the only time I know of in the long calendar of the year when men and women seem, by one consent, to open their shut- up hearts freely.” —Charles Dickens.
