HIGH POINT HIGH
ON WHEELS
Pictured above are the “pride and joys” of Sergeant J. Frank Shields, his driver training classes>
the athletic teams, and the school in general. The two brand new vehicles are operated enUrely in
connection with activities at High ,Point High. The Bison-Bus at the back, and the Driver-Training
car at right expect to see a lot of action before the year is over, though. The folks: in front repre
sent members of a driver training class, the varsit y football team, and student body.
Bison-Bus^ Training Car
Are Vital School Vehicles
Two vital vehicles to High Point" *
High are the newly-purchased
“Bison-Bviis” and a 1949 Ford
Driver-Training car.
The bus was purchased early this
fall by the Athletic Association
for the purpose of transporting
athletic teams; and, although per
haps being new is not so “vital,
the “Bison-Bus” has been kept
pretty busy. It seats 35, and is
covered by full liability insurance,
including occupants, pedestrians,
or other cars who could possibly
figure in an accident. Official
bus driver is Sergeant Frank
Shields, H. P. P. D.; but all trips
are sanctioned by Principal D. P.
Whitley.
A white Ford marked “Driver-
Training” car is a more familiar
sight to students, since HPHS is in
its second-year sponsorship of
these driving classes. The car is
furnished by English Motor E®'!
gas by the high school P.-T. A.
Sergeant Shields, also driving in
structor, selects his future drivers
from gym classes. They undergo
an extensive course, including the
mastering of various testing de
vices donated by the High Point
Rotary Club, before receiving a
license.

Pemican Comes Off
Press In May
“The 1949 Pemican will be
off the press and in the hands
of the students before the end
of school,” states Heywood
Washburn, editor-in-chief.
According to EMitor Wash
burn, several orders have al
ready been sent to John and
Ollier, the engravers; and work
is well under way on the class
panels. Right now the work is
mainly technical.
Miss Dot Hollar, Pemican
faculty adviser, added that one
unusual and encouraging fact is
that the present staff is on
schedule in work lined up for
the year.

H.P.H.S. STUDENTS
VISIT GREENSBORO
“Building Your House,” the
theme of Greensboro Senior High’s
17 th annual Social Standards
Conference, inspired four HPHS
students who attended to discuss
problems with our neighbors on
November 10.
The students, Barbara Mabrey,
Suzanne Slate, Nancy Bright, and
Dafrell Voncannon, journeyed to
the next-door metropolis of
Greensboro to participate in the
discussion of problems termed im
portant to them. The theme was
one of the idealistic type—“Build
ing Your House.”
