November 7, 1950 THE POINTER Pag-e Three B ISONETTE UZZINGS.... The new G. A. A. has lost no time in getting organized. The new gym teacher, Miss Evelyn Prescott, is very much interested in getting a large club this year. Along with the games of soc cer, volleyball, and tennis, to this fall’s program have been added horseshoes, ping pong, badminton, and shuffleboard. A representative system is being put into operation this year. The object of this group is to encour age a large membership from each class. Representing the freshman class is Martha Ellington; the sophomore class, Rebecca Jessup; the juniors, Jane Frank; and the seniors, Anne VonCannon. The girls are definitely money- minded this year. Other than paying dues of 25 cents per semester, they have been selling programs at the Bison football games. This is to finance socials which they are planning during the year. Recently they received an invita tion to a fall playday program of soccer to be held at Greensboro High School soon. The girls are eagerly making plans to attend it. New officers for this year’s club are: President, Gwen Red- deck; vice-president, Catherine Frye; secretary and treasurer, Anne VonCannon; and club re porter, Jo Anne Meredith. In a practice game of soccer, the sophomores and juniors formed the Red team, led by Annie Frances Stutts. This team fought furiously to the end, winning over the fresh man-senior Blue team, with a final score of 4-2. Baby Bison Defeated 13-6 By Salisbury The High Point High School Jun ior Varsity suffered a 13-6 defeat from the Salisbury Jay Vees Thurs day night, October 26, at Salis bury. Playing their fourth game of the season the locals_ lone tally came late in the third quarter when quarterback Fred Byrd com pleted a 48 yard pass to Ronald Nifong who continued over for the score. The Baby Bison had previously played Mt. Airy winning by a 20- 14 score, but losing to strong Bur lington Reserve in their second contest, 27-0. The Jay Vees bounc ed back on October 18 to roll over the same Burlington squad 6-0. In case you don’t “catch,” the boy at left in punt formation is quarterback Billy Jones, in the center is guard Ned Weatherford, and on the right is end Larry Rhodes. Athlete’s Feats The name, Ned Weatherford, us ually focuses a picture of a broad shouldered, six foot two inch titan in the minds of most H. P. H. S students. A trade mark of his good natured character, however, is shown in his own easy going- laughter which he is rarely with out. Ned occupies a big position at left guard on Coach Tony Simeon’s gridiron squad this year. Playing his second season with the Bison, this 186 pound senior was elected Co-Captain of the 1950 High Point eleven. Sports always seemed to attract him. “However,” said Ned, “I real ly got started as a sophomore.” He played junior varsity foot ball that year and also made the sophomore basketball squad. The summers of ’47 and ’48 were spent on the diamond as a catcher for the High Point High baseball team. Last year he was a member of the Hi-Y basketball quintet that rolled to the North and South Carolina Championship at Charlotte. _ Ned has already earned his way into the Monogram Club and has certainly proved his value to the Bison this year. He represents his homeroom, 313, in the Hi-Y organi zation. A final statement by Ned showed his strong dislike to—of all things —books. That is the hope of the High Point High School Black Bi son as they prep for their Friday night grid battle with R. J. Reyn olds at Winston-Salem. The Black Demons from Forsyth are current ly leading the pack in the Western Conference Class .'\^AA race and are favored to continue their win ning ways over the improving Bison. Workhorse of the Reynolds squad has been halfback Charles “Sonny” Ridenhour, their ace passer, run ner, and general point - getter deluxe. Another spark plug in the backfield has been fullback Bre vard Hoover, a hard chai-ging husky who could capably lead the scoring attack should Ridenhour falter. Chief bulwai'k in the Twin City school’s line are All-State guard Wilson Alexander and tackle Joe Wheeling. Tom Lambe serves at an end post and is the target of most of the Demon passes. The defense upfront for the lo cals has been one of the bright spots of a somewhat dull season. Most notable in the protective tac tics has been Co-Captain Ned Weatherford, a constant fifth man in the enemy backfield. Other line men who have shown-up well for the Bison have been Tackles Leroy Sellars and Tom Wood, Center Ronnie “Monk” Falls, and Co-Cap- tain end Larry Rhodes. Most of the backfield chores have been handled by fullbacks Jim Jar- rett and Sonny Sorrell with con siderable aid from halfbacks Doug Farmer, Bobby Lain, and .\lman Butler.
