In Meet With Raleigh Saturday
High Point High’s swimming
squad will invade the realm of the
Raleigh swimmers Saturday for a
return meet with the capital team.
The Bison defeated the Raleigh
tank men by a 53-22 score in their
meeting in High Point. They took
first place in every event except
the diving in this meet and should
repeat this performance this week
end.
Last Wednesday the Bison swam
to a 37-37 tie against the Davidson
Freshman squad swimming in
their own pool. High Point defeat
ed the Frosh when they swam them
the first time at Davidson by a 38
and one half to 35 and one half
score.
The Bison swimmers took only
three first places in this meet but
supplemented them with ample
seconds and thirds. Firsts were tak
en hy breaststroke!’ Buddy Shap-
ard, backstroker Jimmy Younts,
and by the medley relav team of
Shapard, Younts, and Bill Burton,
Buddy Shapard was especially
outstanding, cutting his time on
100-yard breastbroke to 1 min. 12.7
sscorids.
On February 20 High Point took
third place in the eighth annual
Southern Interscholastic s w i m-
ming meet held at Chapel Hill.
They were topped by Granby High
of Roanoke, Virginia, and by the
Purple Whirlies from Greensboro.
High Point had men swimming
in every event in the finals and
took three individual third places.
These were taken by Shapard,
Younts, and Larkin Kirkman. Al
so both Bison relays took thirds.
Next week High Point will play
host to their closest competitor for
the State Championship, Greens
boro, and the following week will
participate in the state meet.

Albert states that Pete Frye from
Greensboro has given him his
toughest match, hut still he pinned
Frye, in the last Greensboro match,
in the second period.
Two years ago, Albert captured
the 127-pound class crown in the
State Tournament. He has a very
good chance of taking the 133-
pound class crown this year.
Albert has also taken part in
football and plans to go out for
the track team this Spring.
Albert’s favorite subject is shop.
Soon he plans to send off a ham
mer as an entry in an industrial
arts contest.
Albert attends English Street
Baptist Church.
As many of us, Albert relishes
steak and French fried potatoes.

Bison Wrestlers To Defend Title
This year’s G. A. A. basketball
team has racked up a fine record.
The girls have a 7-3 won-lost re
cord, and have several games yet
to play.
The individual scoring for the
varsity forwards is as follows:
Susie Gray 141
Martha Ellington 138
Ann Kearns 54
Gail Armstrong 10
Andrea Rutherford 10
Patsy Poole 10
In their three clashes with Allen
Jay, the High Point girls have won
twice and lost once. They have
racked up two wins against
Greensboro, but have dropped a
game each to Hanes and Reynolds.
In a return match, they defeated
Hanes 37-33. The High Point girls
have defeated Trinity twice, the
first game being the closest con
test yet. The score was 48-47.
Susie Gray, captain of the team,
has led the forwards all the way.
She makes so many different and
difficult shots she has no trouble
eluding her guard. Her best shot
is a long one from almost any
where on the forward court.
Several guards have been out
standing. Peggy Shook has proved
her worth by holding her forward
to a low number of points. Martha
Packer, Betty Jo Clary, Pat Hester,
and Ann Teague have also been
valuable in securing the record the
team now holds.
Baseball Season Under Way;
Other Sports To Begin Soon
Spring is nearly here, but here
already are Spring sports. The
close of the basketball and wrest
ling seasons brings with it the
opening of new ones. Baseball has
started; and track, golf, and tennis
are about to get underway.
Baseball season opened last week
as pitcher and catcher tryouts
started, with seven pitchers and
four catchers working out. Regular

Although High Point High got
off to a fine start in the 1953-’54
basketball season, winning their
first four games, they slowed down
after the Christmas vacation to
obtain the position of fifth place
in the conference at the close of
the year.
The Bison lost their final tilt
to the first place 'Whirlie cagers
of Greensboro in an 80-69 battle.
This gave Greensboro their twelfth
win against two losses to give
them the Western Conference
crown over second place Burling
ton. High Point finished up with
a five win, seven loss record.
