i Tuesdaj% March 2, 1954 THE POINTER Page Three HPH^h^^iifnmers To Participate In Meet With Raleigh Saturday High Point High’s swimming squad will invade the realm of the Raleigh swimmers Saturday for a return meet with the capital team. The Bison defeated the Raleigh tank men by a 53-22 score in their meeting in High Point. They took first place in every event except the diving in this meet and should repeat this performance this week end. Last Wednesday the Bison swam to a 37-37 tie against the Davidson Freshman squad swimming in their own pool. High Point defeat ed the Frosh when they swam them the first time at Davidson by a 38 and one half to 35 and one half score. The Bison swimmers took only three first places in this meet but supplemented them with ample seconds and thirds. Firsts were tak en hy breaststroke!’ Buddy Shap- ard, backstroker Jimmy Younts, and by the medley relav team of Shapard, Younts, and Bill Burton, Buddy Shapard was especially outstanding, cutting his time on 100-yard breastbroke to 1 min. 12.7 sscorids. On February 20 High Point took third place in the eighth annual Southern Interscholastic s w i m- ming meet held at Chapel Hill. They were topped by Granby High of Roanoke, Virginia, and by the Purple Whirlies from Greensboro. High Point had men swimming in every event in the finals and took three individual third places. These were taken by Shapard, Younts, and Larkin Kirkman. Al so both Bison relays took thirds. Next week High Point will play host to their closest competitor for the State Championship, Greens boro, and the following week will participate in the state meet. GAA Basketballers Have Good Record, Gray Is Top Scorer Albert Gray Makes Remarkable Record Any chemistry student will tell you that “Ag” stands for silver. Well, in this case, A. G. stands more for gold, the golden-haired Albert Gray. Back on June 9, 1935, Albert’s parents probably thought that they had found a tv: t of gold, —/ill too. usually think of Al- b e r t as a wrestler b e- cause of his remarkable re- c 0 r d. This year, in the 13 3 - pound class, he stood undefeated be fore the Golds boro match last week. Albert when he lost 1-0. He has pinned three out of five of his opponents. Albert states that Pete Frye from Greensboro has given him his toughest match, hut still he pinned Frye, in the last Greensboro match, in the second period. Two years ago, Albert captured the 127-pound class crown in the State Tournament. He has a very good chance of taking the 133- pound class crown this year. Albert has also taken part in football and plans to go out for the track team this Spring. Albert’s favorite subject is shop. Soon he plans to send off a ham mer as an entry in an industrial arts contest. Albert attends English Street Baptist Church. As many of us, Albert relishes steak and French fried potatoes. A. basketball team has racked up a fine record. The girls have a 7-3 won-lost re cord, and have several games yet to play. The individual scoring for the varsity forwards is as follows: Susie Gray 141 Martha Ellington 138 Ann Kearns 54 Gail Armstrong 10 Andrea Rutherford 10 Patsy Poole 10 In their three clashes with Allen Jay, the High Point girls have won twice and lost once. They have racked up two wins against Greensboro, but have dropped a game each to Hanes and Reynolds. In a return match, they defeated Hanes 37-33. The High Point girls have defeated Trinity twice, the first game being the closest con test yet. The score was 48-47. Susie Gray, captain of the team, has led the forwards all the way. She makes so many different and difficult shots she has no trouble eluding her guard. Her best shot is a long one from almost any where on the forward court. Several guards have been out standing. Peggy Shook has proved her worth by holding her forward to a low number of points. Martha Packer, Betty Jo Clary, Pat Hester, and Ann Teague have also been valuable in securing the record the team now holds. Baseball Season Under Way; Other Sports To Begin Soon Spring is nearly here, but here already are Spring sports. The close of the basketball and wrest ling seasons brings with it the opening of new ones. Baseball has started; and track, golf, and tennis are about to get underway. Baseball season opened last week as pitcher and catcher tryouts started, with seven pitchers and four catchers working out. Regular Patsy Pool Makes Busy GAA Member Although High Point High got off to a fine start in the 1953-’54 basketball season, winning their first four games, they slowed down after the Christmas vacation to obtain the position of fifth place in the conference at the close of the year. The Bison lost their final tilt to the first place 'Whirlie cagers of Greensboro in an 80-69 battle. This gave Greensboro their twelfth win against two losses to give them the Western Conference crown over second place Burling ton. High Point finished up with a five win, seven loss record. Patsy Poole, a 16-year-old Jun ior, is an active member of the G. A. A. In her Sophomore year, she at tended all the practices and parti cipated in almost every sport of fered. She was on the speedball team and was an important mem ber of the .Tunior Varsity basket ball squad. She also play ed on the vol leyball and softball teams. This year Patsy has played speed- ball, and she is now a mem- her of the Ijk Varsity squad. Patsy team- Patsy ed with Lyn- neth Binkley in the junior doubles pingpong tournament last year, and came in second place in the state competition. Besides being in the G. A. Although track has not officially gotten underway. It is scheduled to begin in a matter of days with coaches Lewis Hayworth and George Gillie at the head. Mr. Ray Correll will coach the tennis squad, and Coach Tony Sim eon will be driving the bus for the golf team. The schedule for the 1954 track season has been completed with a total of seven meets and is printed below: March 25—R. J. Reynolds—at Winston. April 2—Reynolds, Greensboro, Burlington—at Burlington. April 10—Duke-Durham — at Durham. April 23—Reynolds, Greensboro, Burlington—at Winston. April 15—Reynolds, Greensboro, Burlington,—at Burlington. April 30—Western Conference Meet. May 7—State Track Meet — at Chapel Hill The High Point High School Wrestling Team will be defending their title of State Champions here Friday and Saturday, as they have gone undefeated as a team this year. The Bison gained their most recent victory over the Earth quakes of Goldsboro last Tuesday night, 31-11. The Bison matmen held their own against the formerly unde feated Goldsboro grapplers last week and managed to gain five pins over the visitors. High Point won the champion ship last year by scoring 55 points while Greensboro was runner-up with 40 points. Following are the results of last week’s match: 1. 103 pounds—Brown (H.
