Tuesday, May 18, 1954 THE POINTER Page Five Graduation Leaves Gap In Simeon’s Charging Bison Herd As the year draws rapidly to a close and the Seniors hang up the old blue and white, so well de fended, for the last time, the Pointer says, “Thanks, boys, for a job well done; the best of luck in all future activities.” Big gaps will be left in three Bison squads when David Fagg pulls up stakes and graduates. Coach Simeon had better start searching for another good end for his gridders, and Coach Hay worth ought to keep his eyes open for an outfielder. And, by the way, are there any 175-pound under classmen who think they can win a state wrestling championship ? Jerry Sowers Plays Tennis, Basketball Jerry Sowers is an all around guy. Since he has been quite active around school, you have doubtless ly become acquainted with him. In his sports activities, Jerry has played tennis for three years, going undefeated his first year, losing one his second year, and this year having an 8-3 won-lost record. He was also on the Varsity b a s- ketball team at forward po- sition; and I --M during his B Soph, year he played on the Junior V a r s- ity basketball and football teams. In school ac tivities other than sports, Jerry is in the Nation al Honor Society, Beta Club, Mas que and Gavel, Who’s Who, Mono gram Club, Allied Youth. He was Junior Rotarian in December and in his Junior year, because of his high grades, served as a com mencement marshal. He also works in the cafeteria as a cashier. Jerry reports that he plans to attend the University of North Carolina next year to study busi ness administration. Good luck in that All-American East-West game. Sonny. Talley AVright and Eddie Smoth ers are both hanging their base ball uniforms beside those of a glorious football season, and Char lie “Big Luke” Lucas will hang his golf clubs next to his gridman’s jersey. The Senior class’s lone repre sentative on the tennis team, Jerry Sowers, will be placing his racket alongside his basketball gear when he packs to go. Those from the western part of the state playing are R. J. Reyn olds, Greensboro, Salisbury, Ashe- boro, Burlington, Tri-City, Char lotte Central, and Gray High School. There are also eastern teams participating. Four boys from High Point were to go to the tournament; but since tryouts have taken place after press time their names are not included. Boys trying out were Coker McCain, George Setzer, Joe Teague, Bill Bulla, John Gansman, Thomas Sullivan, David Stanton, Jimmy Boyd, Sanders Dallas, John McCahey, and Charles Lucas. You boys needn’t stop growing, just because you’re leaving us. If the swimming team lost any more men, the loss would break them; and the loss of Bill “Yank” Hayward will surely be felt. Can anybody swim ? Bobby Bayne and Will Byrd who were both such a help in winning the third straight wrestling cham pionship for the Bison will each be leaving an empty locker on the grappling team. With Ray Harris leaving, an other co-captain will he needed to steer the Bison in another victori ous football year, this time all Annual Sports Awards To Be Presented Friday Friday, May 21, is the date set for the presentation of awards to those who have proved themselves outstanding in the field of sports. The speaker for the assembly will be Dr. Kenneth Goodson. One of the outstanding trophies to be given is the Sports Service Award which is given by the coach ing staff to the student who has rendered the most helpful and out standing service to the athletic association and team of High Point High School. The winner of this award does not necessarily have to be an ac tive participant in athletics. The Douglas Reid-Herbert Hod- gin Memorial Award is presented to the athlete who most nearly ex emplifies the American ideals of sportsmanship, Christian charac ter, team spirit, and individual sacrifice. Some other gridders who will be packing their duffle and leav ing empty lockers are Eddie and Vernon Martin, Bill Chniel, Jim Bean, and Dean White. Dean is also putting away wrestling. Tommy Lewis will leave a space for the ’56 cagers to try to fill, and Loy Kennedy is cleaning out lockers for both track and wrest ling. Coach Hayworth will be hunting for a pitcher, shortstop, and right fielder for his new squad when Doug McCall, Tommy Hayworth, and Joe Dean hang up their gloves at the end of this season. Duane (Bobo) Best, Ray Mont gomery, and Wallace Stanley will leave several gaps on the track and field squad also. Although he was not a Senior, the loss of Buddy Boyd, who moved at mid-year to Alabama, will leave, along with the missing Sen iors, a big deficit in the back-field of the grid squad and a hole in the ’56 basketball quintet. All in all, the Bison have done an excellent job this year, taking their third straight wrestling championship and tying for the state swimming title. They have also made a marvelous comeback from bottom to next to the top in football. It’s a good job, boys. ALLEN B.
