I Dr. Ray Lyman W'ilbur, Secretary of the Interior, points out that if we are ever going to rid America cf blotches on the landscapes in the shape of billboards, junkpiles, ugly roadside buildings, unattractive filling stations and dirty and dis reputable approaches to towns and cities, the movement must begin in the schools. Mr. Wilbur is right. The'seftooJ house itself should be the most beau tiful building in its community, in side and out. Its grounds .should be the most attractive and the best kept. An important part of school training should be in such intelli gent appreciation of beauty that chil dren will grow up hating ugliness. Things life that are more import ant than much of the stuff with which school courses are filled now. Most of the book-Iearing the aver- . age person needs to get along in the world can be compressed into three or four years. The more in telligent pupils realize that and ' leave school earl'y, to learn about the world and how it is run by working in it. Preparation for life is the real function of the schooj. To 'train children for life calls for compe tent teachers. 1% is quite as im portant to have experts to take charge of our children as it is to have competent help to look after our livestock. Adequately trained teachers are not cheap. The mea sure of any community’s regard for its children’s future is the salaries “ it is willing to pay its school-teach- ,,
