Annual Convention
excerpts from minutes
OF THE FIFTY-SECOND
ANNUAL CONVENTION OF
N. C. FEDERATION OF
NEGRO WOMEN’S CLUBS
June 1-3, 1961—Shelby, N. C.
The sessions were held in the
Cleveland High School.
At 6:30 P. M. Thursday, June
1st, a dinner meeting of the Exec
utive Board was held in the school
cafeteria. All delegates were pleas
antly greeted by a gracious hostess
and registration committee upon
arrival.
The first General Assembly op
ened Friday with devotions lead
by Mrs. Beulah Perrin, Chaplain;
music was by Sextette of Cleve
land High School.
Vice President Donahu presided
over the morning business session
which consisted mainly of reports
from district presidents. Standing
Committee chairmen and State or
ganizers. Each president gave ex
cellent information on her district
work, which showed signs of in
creased interest and growth.
The report of the Journal covered
the expenses and number published
of the fall and spring issues during
the past twelve months.
B r a i 11 e Magazine Committee
chairman expressed appreciation of
funds received to support the mag
azine and encouraged continued
help.
The Scholarship Committee stated
the need for more and better club
support for this fund, that we may
continue to help our girls enter
college and to encourage their
needs for college training.
Following impressive devotions,
the afternoon session was used for
study.
Miss lone B. Henderson present-
ed plans and directions for three
Workshop groups;
1. Improving Behavior in Public
Places
2. Improving Conditions of Homes
3. Mental Health
A summary of these discussions are
found at end of this record.
A special committee was named
during the morning session to draw
up a letter to be wired to Governor
Sanford, asking that steps be taken
to place a Negro on the State
Board of Corrections of North Car
olina. A request had been made
earlier by letter, but the answer
came from an “Aid” to the Gov
ernor who avoided a direct answer
as to what would be done. This
committee read a very timely ar
ranged letter that was approved
and wired at once.
The 7; 45 P. M. session arranged
by the Local Committee was most
heart warming. The school Glee
Club and the local greetings made
all present feel sure that we had
chosen the right place at the right
time for this convention.
It was indeed a treat and chal
lenge to have Mrs. Rosa L. Gragg
of Detroit, President of the Nation
al ^ Association of Colored Wom
en s Clubs attend our Convention.
She addressed the Friday night
public session on “The Role of
Women in our Community.”
1. Women fit beautifully into the
New Frontier Program — Women
will remake the world.
2. The world needs planning,
thinking and the influence of wom
en,” said Pearl Buck.
3. She pointed to the many out
standing jobs held by women to
day, as;—White House Physician,
Treasurer of U. S., Cabinet Post,
Judges and others.
4. She referred to the New Na
tions emerging upon Washington,
D. C. and their women are with
them, especially African Nations.
There are some twenty-seven wom
en dignitaries taking their places
in our National Capitol.
5. Mrs. Gragg’s appeal was for
more educated women, more Mor
al Leaders among women, and
more women with economic stand
ing. “A woman is a Grand, Glori
ous and Exciting thing” she said.
6. She feels that much Talent is
wasting among women because
they are not pursuing their talents
with force. She predicts the pos
sibility of a woman on the Supreme
Court Bench and Vice President of
the United States.
The National President ended
her message by outlining the As
sociation’s five point program;—
1. The paying of out-standing
debts.
