By J. R. Dungee, A. B. The week of March 15-20 was observed by the students of Johnson C. Smith Uni versity as Health Week. Under the aus- J)ices of Rho Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity a vigorous campaign was waged in the interest of better care of the health. Beginning with a chapel address by the Basileus, Prof. S. Herbert Adams, the Chapter followed .up its appeal with the distribution of a large quantity of instruc tive literature containing valuable informa tion in regard to the preservation of health through the proper care of the body in general. On Monday, W ednesday and Fri day packages of toilet soap, shaving cream and tooth paste were distributed to all the students, thus rendering the campaign more effective. This campaign was a worthy one, and, as such, received just commenda tion from the faculty. Alpha Omicron Chapter of Alpha Phi Al pha Fraternity has held two excellent so cial entertainments during the month of March. The first was held on Friday, the 12th, when a delightful evening was en joyed by the members of the chapter and their lady friends at the home of Colonel Taylor on Hill Street. The lady guests in cluded several out-of-town visitors. On Tuesday, the 23rd, the Chapter en tertained in honor of Rho Chapter of Ome ga Psi Phi in a symposium which was giv en at the Foster House on South Caldwell Street. Those spacious and elaborate quar ters were engaged in order to comfortably accommodate the more than seventy mem bers of the two chapters who are now in Charlotte and who include in addition to a large number of outstanding students, a goodly number of the faculty of Johnson C. Smith University. The occasion was en joyed by all present and served to seal more closely the bond of friendship existing be tween these two fraternities locally. Friday, March 19, will long be remem bered by twelve students of J. C. S. U. and one student of Claflin University, Orange burg, S. C. For the first time in their his tory, and quite coincidentally, the two fra ternity chapters on the campus held their spring initiation on the same night. The next morning radiant smiles shone on the faces of the new born “Greeks,” and on their manly bosoms, proudly exposed by their unbuttoned coats, appeared five daz zling Alpha Phi Alpha Frat pins and eight beautiful emblems of Omega Psi Phi. The proud new wearers of the golden “A Alpha A” are Messrs. N. L. Gregg, W. P. Jen nings, L. H. Mitchell, C. B. Stewart and C. H. White. Those who havt begun to wear the pearl rimmed shield are Messrs. Oliver Canady, W. E. Bailey, L. S. Brown, H. L. Foster, S. M. Gossett, Ray McKenzie, Leon Steele, and Mr. Thomas Frazier, of Claflin University, Orangeburg, S. C. THE SPHINX CLUB By C. B. Stewart, ’27 Spring finds the members of the club still jolly and keeping pace with the cam pus activities in every way. Base ball season has opened and a num ber of the club members are taking active parts in the daily workouts. Quite a few members are taking part in the track team workouts daily. The club was indeed pleased to present to the Alpha Phi Fraternity recently the fol lowing men, viz., Messrs. C. H. White, ’26; N. L. Gregg, ’27; W. P. Jennings, 27; C. B. Stewart, ’27, and L. H. Mitchell, ’28. The rest of the members are now re joicing, for probably the gods will call them next to the sacred mound. The club members are »till trying to ex cel in scholarship and stand out in all the outstanding phases of campus activities, and, last of all, uphold the cherished ideals and last of all, uphold the cherished ideals of the club and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fra ternity. Rho Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity at Johnson C. Smith University. THE SOCIAL WHIRL The Out-In-the-Street Club met as us ual, on Sunday afteimoon, March 7th, at 4 P. M. After the opening chorus, “Lonesome, That’s All,” sung by the Club,” Mr. Warren Russell, a pledgee to Spring initiation, sweetly sang, “I’m Gonna Charleston Back to Charleston.” The Grand Gink and Slow Sheik, Mr. S. C. Johnson, emphatically spoke on “The Extremely Low Ebb of My Social Pros pects.” Mr. J. D. Murray, one of the thir teen founders of the Club, enlightened us on “All Dressed Up and Nowhere To Go.” The club entered into its new business, to wit, the oncoming Spring initiation. Ar ticle three, section three of the constitu tion, stating that only next year’s Juniors and Seniors may be taken in at the Spring initiation, was slightly amended that two especially deseiwing persons might become members of the Club. We refer to “Sec” Miller, much favored by the club on account of his especial out-in-the-streetness, and Mr. R. L. Crater, a victim of the “hatch et,” who seems unable to regain his social equilibrium. According to our system of balloting, all black balls must be cast before any candi date is admitted to the initiation. W. W. Jones and T. L. Plair passed with flying colors. Mr. Plair is indeed one of us and who is a bigger, better Out-In-the-Streeter than our own W. W. Jones? Mr. R. L. Watt, long an ardent aspirant to the club, passed without a dissenting vote. Truly noblemen are born great; so it is with Out-In-the-Strceters; they are born that way. The house applauded the selection of the candidates and the Slow Sheik, Mr. S. C. Johnson, commenting on the rapid progress of the Club, enthusiastically reminded the membership of that dreary Sunday the 13th of November, 1925, when the thirteen original members of this great organization traversed the burning sands into the awak ening light of Out-In-the-Streetdom. Attention was called to the cases of sev eral backbiters who had become “regular.” That of Mr. J. W. Graham, assigned to first ward, was especially flagrant. He was expelled from the club for violation of article thirteen, section thirteen, “No Back biter Shall Operate In the Same Place Reg ularly.” Mr. J. D. Wilson, reporter for our sister branch, read the following minutes of their last meeting: .A.fter the opening chorus, “I Wish I Had Someone to Love Me, Someone That I Could Call My Own,” pathetically sung be the club, the membership solemnly re peated the club motto, “If at First You Don’t Succeed, Try, Try Again.” The Swell Sheba delivered an address on Patience, entitled, “Waiting for the Evening Male.” The Assistant Smooth Sheba suggested that the Club adopt the slogan, “Catch Alpha Omicron Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at Johnson C. Sn ith University^ ’Em With Cunning, Cookery, Camouflage and Cosmetics.” This brilliant suggestion was received with a rousing demonstration and the meeting closed by determinedly singing, “It’s a Man Every Time, It’s a Man.” This report was heard with great inter est, and Slow Sheik Johnson declared that the ladies Branch was truly Out-In-the- Street. The meeting adjourned with the watch word, “Once an Out-In-the Streeter, Al ways an Out-In-the-Streeter.” S. C. JOHNSON, Slow Sheik, D. P. ALLEN, Recording Regulator.
