SMITH BaSKETEERS
START ROMPING
By “Klem,” Jr.
After a rather successful season of coach
ing his Smith Bulls up and down the grid
iron, Coach Randy Taylor has turned his
energies toward the pi’oducing of an equal,
ly efficient set of Bulls on the basket ball
courts. This is Smith’s first year of con
centration of baskei ball development, but
it appears that Coach Taylor is well able
to take raw material and whip it into first
class condition. Thus it was that after
Smith had thoroughly thrashed a fast and
clever team of cagevs from the Lutheran
College to the tune of a 38-12 score that
they took on the highly tooted quint
from Howard and held them to a 23-18
score in favor of Howard. It was only
Howard’s veteran team work that whipped
these plucky Bulls into submission. Simp
son and Woods made some fine shots and
played a worth while game for Howard.
La Saine, a clever guard on the Smith
five, kept a rather colorful audience on its
toes by his smart floor work and clever
ball handling.
The Smith-Virginia game was rather a
lopsided affair. It was five youngsters
against five veterans. And the veterans
won; and they won decisively. The mighty
Henderson of the Seminary five shot
goals at will and was the outstanding lum
inary of the game. Ellis played a smart
defensive game for Smith.

ONE-SIDED FLOOR TILT
Smith is now entering the most interest
ing part of its schedule, that is, that part
which includes the State series. The Smith
Bulls have taken on such teams as How
ard University, Virginia Seminary and
Clark so that the experience gained will
stand them in good stead for the al-im-
portant State series. Shaw University is
the present title holder and it is doomed for
a fall if the Smith men play the brand of
basket ball that they hvae been exhibiting
here of late. The Smith Bulls are working
hard to annex their second State title this
year. They won the foot ball title and
have thir eyes peeled for the basket ball
title. Most folks in the tar-heel State
concede the base-bail title to Smith as they
have all the members of their champion
ship team of last y^ear. If they win the
basket ball title they wil have made a clean
sweep of the major titles of North Caroli
na.
The remaining games are scheduled as
follows;
February 7, ,^haw at Charlotte. t
February 11, Johnson Training Schom at
Charlotte.
February 18, Morehouse at Charlotte.
February 20, Claflin ,at Charlotte.

The Smith Bulls swamped the Living
stone Bears by the score of. .. . . From the
outset the Bears were outclassed and only
once in the second half was anything like
form shown by them. The Bulls began in
the first few minutes of play shooting the
ball through the net and at the end of the
half were leading 20-2;
Smith’s Second and Third Teams Played
Half.
Ancient foes like the Bears were not ex
pected to take such a severe lacing without
putting up stiff opposition; therefore, no
surprise was exhibited by the fans when
they came back in the last half with a bet
ter fighting spirit. They best they could
do, however, was to pile up three points to
13 for the Bulls. The work of La Saine
and Avant was scintillating. The former
was high scorer for the home team.
The Bull cagers are preparing for their
Northern invasion, and the game with Vir
ginia Seminary on the 23rd of January
will be another good test before they take
the road.

ATHLETE AND CO-ED
Co-eds are a liability, according to Knute
Rockne, famous Notre Dame coach, who
attributes his success to the fact that
there are no women at Notre Dame. “She
takes a lot of the athlete’s time, either
at the expense of his studies, his playing
or his sleep.”—Cornell Daily Sun.

respectively. These gentlemen are mem

feature in the Bull wdll be supplanted by
the various superlatives of the ‘Hill,” such
“Most Handsome,” “Most Brilliant,” “Best

The students winning these positions will
occupy an entire page with his resemblance,
save for a small space in which will be in

Students for these various roles will be

The election is to take place some time
