Friday, April 25, 1958 News For Veterans A 16 per cent decrease In the average daily number of tubercu losis patients in Veterans Admin istration hospitals since 1054 was reported by the agency. VA said the daily average drop ped from ^15,221 in fiscal year 1934 to 12,715 in fiscal year 1057, although the number of admissions and discharges of TB patients over the same period remained the same. Dr. Roy A. Wolford, VA deputy chief medical director in Washing ton, D. C., said the average daily decrease resulted from a reduction of length of stay due to drug treat ment pioneered by VA research plus a VA program that permits TB patientsito return home wUle they ere under drug therapy. He said while the average period of TB drug treatment is 18 to 24 months, many TB patients can leave the hospitals aher eiipit or nine months, provided they contin- A Great Number of People Entrust Us with Their Pre scriptions. That statement by Tilman R. Walker, chairman of the ASC state committee, sums up the objectives of the 1958 Agricultural Conserva tion Program. He added, “We need to offset soil deterioration general ly, and on many soils, we need to go even further and rebuild them after years of mis-use.” As Walker sees it, the first job of ACP is to check deterioration, to prevent the soil from becoming less and less productive as the top layer ue to receive adequate medical su pervision. To prevent holding patients in the hospital when they require on- 1/ occasional observation or treat ment, a program called “comple tion of bed-occupancy care” has been developed by VA over the years, Dr. Wolford said. Under this program, certain TB patients may leave the hospital and return for completion of treat ment, particularly in areas where community resources for follow-up eare are inadequate, he said. Dr. Wolford said this form of completion of hospital treatment also is used for psychiatric patients on trial visit to their communities, for cancer patients, and for others with long-term illnesses. Veterans Administration will dis continue study of the newer antibi otic, streptovaricin, following one year of use against tuberculosis un der scientific controls, the agency said. The VA study was begun after reports presented at the February, 1957, VA-Armed Forces conference on chemotherapy of TB indicated that streptovaricin showed promise in treatment of the disease. Adpiinistration df a combination of streptovaricin and isoniazid to TB patients has not proved superior to use of isoniazid alone, VA said, and in some cases streptovaricin produced nausea. The study was part of VA’s con tinuing project for, testing newer TB drugs in cooperation with the Armed Forces, which,'since 1946, has given doctors throughout the world the modern methods used for treating the disease with strepto mycin, PAS, and isoniazid. Q—I am a Korea veteran with a service-connected disability not se vere enough to warrant compensa tion payments. Would that qualify me for special GI insurance for dis abled Korea veterans? A—Yes. A noncompensable serv ice-connected disability would quali fy you for the special insurance, so long as it isn’t a dental condition for which a rating was made only for purpose of dental treatment. Q—I understand a .war veteran needs at least 90 days military service to qualify for a pension. If he was absent without leave, would that time count toward his 90 days? A—If his pay were forfeited for his period of absence without leave, that time would not count toward the 90-day minimum service re quirement. Q—I am a widow of a deceased World War II veteran and I never have remarried. Also, I served in the WAVES during World War II. Thus, it seems to me I would have entitlement to two GI loans. Am I right? A—No. Under the law you would have only one entitlement to a GI loan, not two.. of topsoil is washed or blown away. But hand in hand with this is the job of rebuilding agricultural resources for the “long pull” ahead. Cropping, as well as erosion, de pletes the soil of plant food. Walk er pointed out that on an acre of fertile soil growing a cultivated crop such as corn, the break-down of the soil may be as great as losing 20 tons of topsoil through erosioii. Walker stressed the fact that the nation is now faced with the ebal- lenge of adjusting prodtietipng current needs, and at^the same time keeping land in condition to meet the greatly increased demands' of rapidly growing population in-thd future.
