Pago 2 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, May 2, 1958 Buds AND Blossoms By MAMIE MILLER “Iti every peart and corner of our life, to lose oneself is to be gainer; to forget oneself is to be hapiiy.” Such was the philosophy of llobert Louis Stevenson. It is very important that chil dren have the privilege of garden ing early. And it is essential that the aged have the benefit of living with growing things. All the gardens in New Bern are in full glory after the high winds and heavy fainfall. Iris are bursting fortli in all the colors of the rain bow. We find the pinks, thrift, pansies, candy tuft and primroses in full color. The tulips are later than usual, but we have many tulips blooming in New Bern. Be sure and remem ber how many people enjoy your garden, and plant more varieties this -year. Since we have many persons who are seeking outlets to find happi ness. lets help the retarded youth, the aged and the handicapped find it in the growing of our garden. It has been written that “glad ness of the heart is the life of rtian, and joyfulness of a man prolongeth his days.” Inspired by the clean up, fix up and paint up campaign in our City, we can do much to help our community by planting. Put tuberoses out now, Russeau statice, nicotiana and gomphrena, and plant all the Summer vines. Be sure to include some of the orna mental gourds this season. If you didn't plant columbine in the Fall, plant it now. With all the flowers growing in the outside, we might brush up on some points to keep flowers fresh for the home, for hospital patients, and for shut-ins. Place stems about one-fourth of an inch deep in almost boiling IT TAKES TIME FOR $'S TO GROW. PLANT THEM NOW! Donald T. Many items preserve the life of flowers, such as cane sugar, grain alcohol or gin, boric acid, oil of pepper mint, paraffin and salt. As we grow our many blossoms this .season, let’s remember those who can’t enjoy our pleasure by sharing with them. The sixth chapter, 38th verse of Luke says— “Give, and it shall be given unto you, pressed down and shaken to gether, and running over.” Today and Every Day A. D. We didn’t miss the “long- handles” when we changed into summer clothes, because we have five consecutive days of open weather with daytime temperatures had five consecutive days of open Azaleas, weeping cherries, crab ap ples and dogwood are in full bloom. Peaches have pollinated and are setting fruit and warm season vegetables are being planted. I am still keeping my fingers cross ed but these are the facts. It is surprising how quickly sun and wind will dry out the top few inches of soil, so don’t let your plants suffer for lack of water. If you have a spring planted lawn, be sure to keep it watered. Peaches should be sprayed when all of the petals have fallen and again as the shucks begin to shed from the little fruits. Use all-purpose peach spray, or six pounds of wettable sulphur plus four pounds of mala- thion (25 per cent W.P.) to each 100 gallons of water. Use the same spray for both the petal fall and shuck spray. Apply the first spray to bunch grapes as soon as the young shoots are about two inches long and again when they are about 12 inches long. Use Bordeaux mix ture both times. For scale on camellias, use white oil emulsion according to manu- laclurcr's instruction. Sprays sliould contain one per cent actual oil lor summer use. Malathion should take care of lace bugs and red spider mites on azaleas and camellias. If you use 25 per cent wettable powder, mix at the rate of two tablespoons per gallon of water. If emulsifiable concentrates are used, follow instructions on the container. If you want to try Systox, be careful and follow instruc tions to the letter. Our roses are growing nicely and we have already sprayed them twice —a doianant clean-up ana the first summer cover. The combined in secticidal and fungicidal spray and dust materials are very satisfactory and easy to use. I prefer to spray because you get good coverage and the materials stick- hettei. MICE MAY AID CANCER WAR San Francisco—Human canqer cells accidentally injected into pregnant mice have -“taken” and are growing nicely, according to a statement made earlier this month by Dr. Victor Richards, a Stanford University surgeon. This surprising result of an ex periment which otherwise failed has disclosed that there may be something about pregnancy which enables a mother to tolerate for eign tissues.
