When the sun gets hot and the soil dry, there are a few shrubs that can be depended upon. Just a shower will start them bloom ing. The chaste tree of five to eight feet is a delightful blue, used as a background shrub, and is always dependable. A small clipping will give you a nice plant next year. Our summer lilacs, or but terfly bushes are gorgeous. They are like the chaste shrub because they are winter killed, but come out quickly from root. 'These come in many lovely colors—red, pur ple, pink and white. Dahlias are easy to grow. They come in 2,000 named varieties. Speed-well or veronica spicata is a beautiful blue perennial. It also comes in pink. Sneeze wort is an old garden plant that resembles yarrow. It requires no attention except to cut the blossoms.
