Page 3 les ;ht jrn 'he we At Smh in Ttia Mirror's SPORTS ^ of Athletes and Events Losing a ball game is hardly a pleasant experience, and the 6 to 0 defeat that the Bears absorbed at the hands of Washington’s Pam Pack was no exception. However, the Bruins have come a long way since the 25 to 7 lick ing dished out to them in 1957 by this selfsame adversary. What they lacked in offensive power Friday night was all but offset by a stout defense. We seriously doubt that many teams will be able to hold the Pam Pack to a lone touchdown during the balance of the season. To be sure, it. is hard to visualize any other eleven equaling the goal line stands that the Bears put up. Whatever the future may hold for the charges of Coach Sam Arbes, it is reasonable to . assume that New Bern’s opponents won’t Seat Covers • Convevtlbl* Tape • Complete Aute hiterier • Truck Seats CAVANAUGH'S AUTO UPHOLSTERY Wm. Elizabeth City was the pre-sear ^on favorite to cop the Northeast ern Conference crown, and on the basis of their 6-6 tie with the frosh of East Carolina College it would appear that they have what it takes to go all the way. Jacksonville fans have been openly optimistic - this year. ’They expect the Cardinals to assert themselves at long last, and their 19 to 6 conquest over Greenville last Friday seemed to justify such faith. Roanoke Rapids did little to en hance its prestige in downing Ahoskie 13 to 6, 'but the Bears aren’t taking the lads at the far end of the Conference lightly. Kinston’s Red Devils were neither a credit to themselves nor the loop in their encounter With the Raleigh Caps. Slaughtered 46 to 7, they’ve got a long way to go to measure up to the fine Kinston teams of the not too distant past. All in all, it looks like an in teresting Northeastern Conference season is in store for the cash customers. The Bears are capable of giving any team a tough time of it, and fans who follow them should have nothing to be ashamed of, win or lose. $50.00 Allowance for Your Old Range Regardleit of Age or Condition - on » New - - " COMPLETELY AUTOMATIC PYROFAX GAS RANGE Low Down Payment Easy Terms Craven County Gas Co. “I like baseball games with lots of baseknocks and lots of scoring,” a fan writes us. “What game in Coastal Plain history would you say was the ultimate in this cate gory?” Well, for, want of a better game we’d have to vote for Snow Hill’S 15 to, 13 victory over the Ayden Aces, on June 28, 1935. Seven pitchers gave up 40 hits, and it took 11 innings to settle the conr test. For the most unusual stick work in a ball game, our choice would be Tarboro’s hard earned, 8 to 7 win over the Kinston Eagles on June 25, 1937. The victors collected 17 hits, and, unbelievable though it may seem, all 17 were singles. Doesn’t exactly make sense, we’ll have to admit. But neither do some of the present tax laws. For instance, a strange twist in federal law lets sev eral milkon American people and businesses escape pay*: ing all the taxes in their electric bills that you pay in yours.
