Whatever else may be in store for the New Bern High school Bears to night, when they entertain Washing ton’s Pam-Pack here, there is little danger that they’ll be plagued by cockiness. Any illusions the Bruins might have had about their own invinci bility vanished'last Friday when the Morehead City Eagles defeated them 6-0 in the rain. It was no fluke win. That night the Bruins were outplay ed and outsmarted, statistic notwith standing. Fumbles hurt, but the bet ter ball club on the field emerged as victor. Having seen the Eagles the prev ious week, when they didn’t look too impressive swamping a weak Rich- lands eleven 39-0, we were surprised at their improvement. Coach Norman Clark really had his clam diggers CLEANERS 223 CRAVEN fey-'-"' J. W. SMITH AGENCY, INC. General Insurance . PREMIUMS FINANCED Governor Tryon Teltphents Ml 7^5500 % ME ^.2344 « steamed up for this one. Let’s face it, the Bears left a lot to be desired in their forward wall. Coach Bill Klutz had anticipated trouble from Morehead’s senior line men, and his fears were justified. Chuck Sledge, particularly, made things miserable for the Bruins, and he"had able assistance'from his team mates. Meanwhile, Washington’s Pam- Pack was pulling a surprise by trouncing Wilson’s Eastern 4-A champions 13-0. As usual, pessimistic reports have been coming from the Pam-Pack camp in recent weeks, but those who know Coach Choppy Wagner never sell him short. Choppy likes to assume the role of a Gloomy Gus, and last year the Bears defeated his team decisively. However, with many of his veterans still around he is in good shape to tackle the stiffest of Northeastern Conference foes. K;nstoa’s 14-6 decision over Tar- boro’s defending champions was a clear indication that the Red Devils must be reckoned with this season. At the moment. New Bern isn’t look ing beyond the Pam-Pack. Be on hand tonight for a traditional game that could be a thriller you’ll long remember. Robert Lee Willis and wife, Ger trude S. Willis, to David H. Powell and wife, Patricia B.
