Page Eight THE NEW BERN MIRROIt, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, March 16, 1962 Teen Topics By CAROLYN COKER The science fair was held at the High school Monday. That day all tile students were frantically add ing last minute touches to get the l>rojects ready for display. Judging took place that night, v/ith ribbons being given to the first, second, and third places in physics, chemistry, biology, and general science. The first prize in ))hysics went to a hydraulic brake; chemistry, colleroids; biology, (ihotomicrography; and general .science, a fossil display. Our wrestling team came out on top in the wrestling tourna ment. About eight of the boys are champions, so they will continue to the state competition. Baseball is underway now. The first game is scheduled for March £0. Track is also off to a “running Start.” We got out of school Wednes day at two o’clock to see the Con federate centennial celebration. (Incidentally, that is Confederate). Celebration of our defeat is really something to brag about, don’t >ou think? Anyway, our band was in the parade. Governor Sanford is coming to our school to speak to us on March 27. Naturally, we can hardly wait to see THE Sanford in the flesh. Aren’t we becoming im portant? Have you noticed how many girls have been going around with those real wild hairdos? The term used to describe the effect is “teased.” It is achieved by ratting the hair or back combing it until it is all knotted up. The top hair is lightly brushed over to cover the snarls, and presto, the inflated look. Every man who observes virilant- ly and resolves steadfastly grows unconsciously into genius. — Ed ward Bulwer-Lytton. Call JOE ANDERSON DRUG STORE for Reliable Prescription Service ME 7-4201 Coal! A car can still run fairly well despite .many things wrong with it. But, the hard fact is that regular tune ups are necessary if we are to get our money’s worth in performance and economy. An engine tune up begins with a compression check. Compression in each cylinder is measured to indicate excessive wear in valves, cylinders and piston rings. An engine showing poor compression usually needs more than a tune up and money spent for one may be wasted. If compression, on the other hand, is okay then plugs should be removed and checked. They should be cleaned and regapped to specifications. Or if they are fouled, replaced. At the same time the distributor points and conden ser should be serviced with re placement parts. The electrical system should get a going over. This means a careful check of the battery, battery bracket, voltage regulator, genera tor, ignition wiring. Next the fuel system, the car buretor, fuel pump, and filter must be cleaned and worn parts replaced where necessary. EXPERT FENDER & BODY WORK WHEELS BALANCED FINEST PAINTING JOBS “Where Service Is Better” FLOYD'S FRONT END ALIGNMENT Floyd Paul, Jr. Highway 17 South 637-5040 A test of the fuel pump is important. It must give the right pressure to deliver gas to the engine. A fussy pump can mean “trouble about to happen” as one mechanic says. A badly worn fuel pump means your car may cut out when you’re driving, caus ing that uncomfortable sensation of the engine gasping for fuel. If it fails entirely your car would be “out of gas” even though the tank was full. Every car owner can benefit from knowing just what an engine tune up is and why it should be done regularly. Neglect can lead to costly maintenance. A handy checklist for complete engine tune up would include: Compression check of all cylin ders. Test battery and cables; clean or replace. Check fuel pump for correct pressure and fuel de livery. Check starting system. Carbu retor — clean and adjust, new gaskets if necessary. Filters, oil and air, cleaned or replaced. Clean or replace spark plugs, set electrode gap. Tighten manifold studs and inspect heat control valve. Check ignition wiring and cables. Adjust idle mixture. Set engine timing to correspond with fuel used. Adjust fan belt. Check cooling system for leaks and hose restriction. Finally, as recommended by automotive specialists, if your en gine starts hard, seems to cut out when you press down quickly on the accelerator, or does anything else that seems wrong, tell your mechanic about it before he starts your tune up. He won’t expect you to use technical terms — and often your description will give him just the clue he needs to find the trouble and correct it. COULD BE.. .Bless that govern ment of ours. It’s given me a clue to the highway safety problem. What I’m talking about is the current catalog of pamphlets and what-have-you published by the Government Printing Office. There’s one straight faced listing with the intriguing title, “Guid ance For the Underchiever With Superior Ability.” Now maybe that’s our trouble — too darn many “underachievers” on North Carolina roads. What this country needs is not more judges but more judgment. The rich man has acute laryn gitis but the poor man has a cold. The average man detects a rattle in his car more quickly than one in his head. The pure and simple truth is rarely pure and never simple. mffmia AMATiMSS NEW EXPRMON OF A FAMOUS TRAOmON.^’^ I XYPEWEETEB 1 With all thfl Virtues that : have made Royal famous : for 56 yearsi low cost, I hard work, long life, high g trade-in and a pleasant ; way with secretaries.
