Buds
AND
Blossoms
By

"That good thing which was
committed unto thee keep by the
Holy Ghost which dwelleth in
us,"—n Timothy 1:14,
You may have an inexpensive
garden in summer by planting
annuals. Grow these in mass
effect, borders and beds.
Ageratum, California poppy,
celosia, pinks, dahlia, petunias,
marigolds, snapdragon, ver
bena, zinnia, and portulace will
make a lovely garden.
Baby blue eyes, candytuft,
sand verbena, Virginia stock
and Dahlberg daisy are good for
rock gardens.

Many annuals have beautiful
foliage, even if the flower isn’t
too pretty. Summer fir, summer
poinsettla, snow-on-the-moun-
tain, castor bean and salvia
do have unusual, colorful fol
iage.
Annual vines will cover a
multitude of sin. Grow them on
screen, fence or trellis—grow
on stones or a hillside.
Balloon vined, cardinal
climber, cypress vines, cup-
and-saucer, hyacinth bean, Jap
anese hop, nasturtium, scarlet
runner, morning glory and many
others are very easily grown.
Be sure to buy sunflower seed
to plant this spring. Even the
birds will thank you. You may
feast on them too. Roast in
peanut oil—stir constantly. Try
them!
This week, for our Buds and
Blossoms poem, we turn to a
recent issue of the Coastland
Times andSarahHansen’slove
ly lines titled "Ocracoke."
Blow wind, blow, so lonely and
free
Bring in your breath cool
from the sea.
This is your home, this wind
swept spot
This is the land that time
forgot.
This is the Island, Ocracoke
Where Blackbeard’s power at
long last broke
Yet sUll today his den is near
Even his gold lies buried
here.
This is the place of hidden
lanes
And trees bent down by
sweeping rains
Protecting tiny sea kissed
homes.
This is the place where the
wild pony roams
This is the place of Silver
Lake
With tiny boats tied to a
stake,
And larger boats lie anchored
there
Waiting for days when fish
ing’s "fair”.
Here’s where there’s still a
general store
That’s part of life, not dead
folk lore.
Where pots and pan, andSunday
shoes
Are sold along with paints and
glues.
Here’s where folks are honest
and true
Some don’t like you. vet
others do.
But if they don’t they never
lie
They turn their head and pass
on by.
This is the place where days
are long
With time to hear the lone
gull’s song
Or walk along a salty beach
And watch a sea bird’s meal
time reach.
Here is the spot, the hidden
place
Where you see yourself face
to face,
No hiding sell within the mobs
Or killing sell with things
