New Bern Jaycees relied on the writings of Dan Daniel and H, G. Salslnger as their source of material and couldn’t have shown better Judgment. However, for the many who would like to know how the Babe got his nickname, we’d like to pass along this infor mation. Especially so, since it has a North Carolina setting. Signed to a professional con tract by the Baltimore Orioles, Ruth reported for spring train ing and came to bat for the first time in an exhibition game at Fayetteville. Swinging for all he was worth, the pudgy rookie homered over the rlghtfleld wall. “Look at the baby,” somebody yelled. “Baby” was shortened to “Babe” on subsequent appear ances at the plate, and a famous sports name was born. It has been our good for tune to personally know Ruth, Ted Williams, and Joe Di maggio. All would have to be HANK’S GAL .... Linda Foster, a young attractive blonde, will be seen in the Friday night comedy series on NBC TV titled “Hank.” She’ll be Hank’s girl friend. Perhaps because we first saw the Bambino close at hand as a small boy brimming with hero worship, he has always remain ed most vivid in our memory. Off the field, even as on, he reigned supreme. Despite his size, he moved with tte ease of a cat-stepping lightly and with little effort. Although neither the Babe nor Ted Williams speared to us to have quite as much grace fulness as Dimaggio, their co ordination was terrific. Another fhmous man, Douglas Fairbanks, displayed this same quality as a movie actor. Grantland Rice, greatest of all sports writers, recognized this fact, and said Fairbanks too could have geen a star athlete.
