IN NEW BERN TODAY
, Here in America we take for
granted that our nation is the
leader in almost every field of
endeavor. When it comes to the
use of television in our schools,
we are far behind England.
For proof we offer the fact
that the Inner London
Education Authority has a TV
system with 500 miles of coaxial
cable, serving 1,200 schools and
130 adult education institutions.
This winter alone there will be
no less than 420 telecasts to
classrooms over seven
channels. Each of the programs
is written, directed and
presented by teachers, with
two pupils appearing with them.
The lessons are taped, and
repeated, whenever this is to
the advantage of young
viewers. The agenda also
includes instruction at various
hours for teachers. Subjects
covered include languages,
mathematics and music.
Teenagers may be slow
growing up, but we certainly

grow older quite quickly when
we experience the ordeal of
exams. Cramming until the wee
small hours, before the day of
reckoning is bad enough, but the
actual exam is worse than a
meat grinder.
Blessed are the fortunate few
who have photographic
memories, and can easily
recollect what was learned
months ago. Also to be envied
are those who read rapidly, and
just scan the pages.
Speaking of reading, a study
recently conducted by the
Bureau of Advertising reveals
that young people are looking
less at television and reading
more newspapers. Interviewed
were 1,600 between the ages of
14 and 25.
The survey showed that 73
percent in this age group read
one or more newspapers on the
average weekday. And these
young people don’t just read
certain portions. They peruse
almost everything, including
ads.
Because you are an avid
newspaper reader doesn’t
necessarily mean that you are a
leader. However, the survey
does show that those who are
most mature are more apt to
read newpapers regularly, just
as you are doing at this very
moment.

way to shadows.

According to experts at the
