Forest and NCSU for- are suggesting operations in of infestation. “Harvesting forest trees when they reach maturity and following a good sanitation program are the best and quickest means of beetle control,” Whitfield said. The beetle is more likely to be found in stagnated stands of over mature trees, smailer trees in dense stands, trees on poor growing sites or in trees that are under any other form of stress. “The best protection against the beetle is a good, healthy stand,” Whitfleld believes. Symptoms of southern pine beetle infestation don’t show immediately. Its presence may be indicated by patches of dead and dying pines. Infested trees may have small reddish-brown globs of resin with a hole in the center of each. The attack starts in the bark in the middle and upper sections of the trunk. Ten days to two weeks after the tree has been attacked, the needles turn yellowish-green. As the infestation progresses, the needles turn a deep yellow. This is when the beetles leave to infest other trees. If the bark appears to have been riddled with a charge of bird shot from a shotgun, the beetles have left the tree. If beetles attack in late fall or winter, the foliage may remain green until spring. To confirm that a tree has been attacked by the southern pine beetle, peel off a section of bark from the infested area. If there are winding, S-shaped tunnels on the inner side, beetles are present. Natural factors are important in the control of this pest. Tem- AIR-FLUFF BEDDING Use your clothes dryer to air and dust bedding, dra peries and slipcovers. Dodge Mart »c Hwy. 70 East at Dodge Airport Road Homo of Dependable Used Cars AS PLAIN AS AN OLD SHOE There ain’t nothing fancy about Joe Bright. Born and raised on a dirt farm in eastern North Carolina, he isn’t ashamed to admit there’s a lot of the country still in him. You don’t find many like him in North Carolina’s General Assembly, and that’s probably a pity. As a farmer and a success ful businessman he sweats to get things done, and leaves the perspiring to others more dignified but less active. Not that Joe Bright is crude. Without pretense he practices old fashioned cour tesy. Having come up the hard way, he re spects a citizen for what he is, not for what he has. Joe Bright has the sound, cracker-barrel philosophy you used to find around general stores, at wide places in the road. We lost something when it vanished. Maybe Joe can bring it back. He made a mighty good start during his first term in the State Legislature, and he aims to do even better this time around. Elect Joe Bright as one of your three repre sentatives from Craven, Jones, Lenoir and Pamlico counties. You’ll be telling Raleigh and the world that you believe a farm boy grown up, who thinks straight and wants to do right, is a pretty good bet to serve you well in the General Assembly.
