Kite combines
dedication and
enthusiasm

Tennis
Clinic
At 39 years of age,
Laurie Lee Kite combines
the enthusiasm of youth
with the dedication and
wisdom of one much older
in his job as Assistant
Administrator at The
Craven County Hospital in
New Bern. The Vanceboro
native has earned the
respect of both his
superiors and his employees.
Laurie Lee Kite, a. 1958
graduate of Farm Life High
School, is the son of Mr.
Henry Kite of New Bern
and Mrs. Bertha Bell Kite of
Vanceboro. He started his
career as an apprentice
electrician at E. I. DuPont
Co. of Kinston. In thirteen
years, he worked his way
up first becoming a
journeyman and finally
being promoted into a sup
ervisory position. While in
management with DuPont
Kite helped several other
wage-roll employees to
become supervisors. He is
quick to thank the people
who helped him in his job
in management. In Nov
ember, 1976, Kite joined
the staff at Craven County
Hospital as Personnel
Director. Only one year
later, he was promoted to
Assistant Administrator.
In addition to the Person
nel Department which
numbers over 869 employ
ees, Kite administers nine
other departments. Those
departments are Speech &
Hearing, Food Services,
Purchasing, Radiation
Therapy, Ambulance

Kite considers himself
very people oriented. “I do
what needs doing,” he
commented, “I feel like its
my job to support my
people.” Kite will often hop
in and drive an ambulance
if needed. Because of this.
Kite is well respected by
his employees.
In addition to his
activities at the hospital.
Kite is involved in many
community activities. He
is the Craven County
Director for the Area
Health Education Center
(AHEC), a member of the
Craven County Safety
Committee, the Craven
County Fire Commission,
and the N. C. Personnel
Association. During the
past year. Kite served as
Drive Chairman for the
United Way of Craven
County. He also served as
president of the West
Craven High Eagle Club.
During the year, the club
made a tremendous
increase in revenue for the
West Craven High School
Athletic Program. He
attends Centenary United
Methodist Church and is a
member of the Vanceboro
Masonic Lodge, the
Scottish Rite, and the
Shriners.
Kite is married to the
former Cheryl Arthur of
Askins. The Kites have
three sons Darren 18, Jamie
16, and Patrick 10. Mr.
Kite and his family reside
in the Askins Community
where they have lived for
over nineteen years.
Beginning Monday
evening, July 9, the
Vanceboro Area Tennis
Association in cooperation
with the Craven County
Recreation & Parks
Commission will be
offering Adult and Youth
Tennis Clinics at the Farm
Life Courts in Vanceboro.
Tennis instruction for
adults will be held Monday
night from 6-9 p.m. Tennis
instruction for youth ages
15 years and under will be
held Tuesday, July 10th
from 5-8 p.m. Supervising
the tennis clinics will be
Jimmy Huff. Jimmy has
played the game while in
college and since. Last
year he finished second in
the Men’s Singles. Helping
with tennis instruction
will be Glen Seamster and
Jay Huff. Glen is the
reigning Men’s Singles
Champion and currently
heads the Men’s “A”
Ladder in the Summer
Tennis Ladder. As a senior
at West Craven High
School, Glen earned the
number one position and
was named most valuable
player for the year.
Though only fifteen years
old. Jay plays in the
number one position on the
West Craven High Tennis
Team. Last year in the
tournament. Jay teamed
with his father, Jimmy to
capture the Men’s Doubles
Crown.
Tennis balls will be
provided, however each
person must furnish his or
her own racket. There is
no cost for the clinic.
