West Craven High’s
Eagles, behind the
rebounding and scoring
of Mike Emanuel and
Rufus Harris, came
from behind to erase
a 26-21 New Bern half
time lead to win, 66-58
at home last Saturday
ight. The win was the
^ agles’ fifth straight
with no losses thus far
this season.
After an exciting first
first half, which saw
the Eagles miss capita
lizing on numerous
Bear turnovers, the
Eagles began to get
their game together.
Over one minute elapsed
in the third period
before New Bern
increased their lead to
seven at 28-21 with
6:49 left in the period.
Finally, the Eagles
began to exert their
board dominating style,
scoring three quick
Three in a row
baskets to pull within
one. From that point on
the teams traded
baskets with the Bears
never quite being able to
shake the determined
Eagles. The game began
to turn toward the
Eagles when they went
to their alternating full
and half-court zone
presses. Four straight
Eagle buckets produced
a five point lead with
2:48 remaining in the
third quarter.
With about one
minute left in the third
period, the ball bounced
the Eagles’ way with
dramatic results. A
steal by New Bern’s
Glendale Gibbs for an
easy lay up was nullified
by a personal foul call.
New Bern Coach Jimmy
Thames protested the
call and drew a tech
nical foul for his efforts.
In high school basket
ball, a technical foul on
the coach awards a
mandatory two shots.

Highlights Sports
Last week, the Lady
Eagles of West Craven
High School extended
their winning streak to
three games with a Friday
night thumping of Pamlico
65-52. Earlier the girls had
blasted the Hurricanes in
Bayboro 71-37 in a
Tuesday evening game.
The streak began on
December 3 with a 45-40
heart throbber over New
Bern at West Craven.
Currently the girls sport a
3-2 record.
Friday night, Pamlico
failed to score a single
point until almost the
entire first quarter had
picked away. The Eagles
■ hipd the shooting
^rouches of Gwen Harris,
Monica Brown and Laura
Lancaster built a thirteen
point lead before allowing
the Hurricanes to score a
field goal.
In the second quarter,
Pamlico closed to within
four points with five and
one-half minutes to go in
the half. Two long passes to
Laura Lancaster for easy
lay ups put the Eagles back
up by eight. Just after the
half, the Hurricanes again
threatened to make a game
of it coming to within five
28-23. Following a time
^lut the Eagles cruised to
victory leading by as many
as eighteen points during
the fourth quarter.
“The girls are really
beginning to play together
better,” one coach com
mented, “Of course we still
have some improvements
to make.” The girls played
North Lenoir at West
Craven last night.

Harris leads
After five games, Gwen
Harris leads the Eagle
scoring attack with a 11.6
points per game average.
Monica Brown is next with
9.2 per game while Laura
Lancaster is averaging 8.2.
Forrest Moore cooly
sank both ends of his one
and one free throws for
the personal foul then
equally cooly swished
both technical bonuses.
Seconds later Craig
Barfield converted one
free throw coming after
the Eagles’ inbounds
play capping a five point
play for the Eagles and
sending Bear floor
general Glendale Gibbs
to the bench with five
fouls.
In spite of their good
fortune in the third
quarter, the Eagles still
had a scrappy, if
rudderless. New Bern
team to contend with in
the final period. The
Bears made a last gasp
to come within one
point, 50-49. From that
moment on the Eagles
pressure zone defense
prevailed sending the
