VI—t Craven Highllghte May 8,1980 P«f 5 Eagles win third rANCEBORO - West Craven’s Varsity Boy’s Track team took third place honors in the Coastal 3-A Conference track Meet held here last Thursday. The team scores were White Oak 72^, Havelock 68, West Craven 64, West Carteret 37, and East Carteret 27. In addition, the Eagles qualified six for the sectionals in New Bern this Friday. West Craven trailed by only two points going into the mile relay, the last event. The Eagles could manage only a third place showing in that race allowing White Oak and Havelock to slip by. Rufus Harris, Kenny Wesley, Julius Baker, the 440 relay team of James Roach, Shawn Becton, Forrest Moore, and Calvin Harris all qualified to represent West Craven in the sectionals Friday. Marvin Jenkins also qualified but will be unable to compete due to surgery Monday to correct a basketball injury. Rufus Harris won the long jump, the 120 high hurdles, the 180 low hurdles and placed second behind teammate Marvin Jenkins in the triple jump. James Roach placed second in the discus with a toss of 121 feet. Despite his basketball injury, Marvin Jenkins has added a lot of strength for another second place ribbon. Eagle leaper Kenney Wesley won the high jump also with a 6'4" leap. Julius Baker took second in the 880 yard run in 2:09.8 while West Craven’s 880 relay and mile relay teams place2 third. West Craven won the 440 yard relay in 46.4. This marked the first time the Eagles had beaten Have lock in this event this year. West Craven pops Rams by Alice Warmack Special to the Highlights VANCEBORO - West Craven’s Eagles blasted twelve hits off the Havelock pitching staff enroute to a 9-4 thumping of the Rams in Coastal 3-A Conference baseball action here last Thursday. The Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead before allowing the Rams to get their first score in the fifth inning. Havelock dented the Eagle defense for four runs in the fifth but the Eagles came back in the bottom of the fifth with three runs of their own to finally bury the visitors. Eagle Baseball Coach Lorenzo Jones was very ex cited about his ieam’s hitting. “We had better hitting today than any game we have played all year,” Jones explained. The Eagles awesome offense more than made up for the five miscues given on defense. The Eagles play West ^^teret Friday in fl|ehead City in the s^gon finale. Currently, the Eagles record stands at 3-9 overall. Playing the third position during most of the season, Forrest compiled a 5-3 record, the only winning record on the team. As a team, the Eagles did not fare as well, finishing on the bottom of the Coastal 3-A Conference with a 1-7 mark. The Eagles sole win was a 5-4 edging of East Carteret. In the Conference Tournament held last Friday, the Eagles’ Keith Gaskins advanced into the second round by eliminat ing Stacy Davis of East Carteret, 6-4, 6-1. Later, Gaskins fell to top seed, Paul Pagnano 6-1, 7-6. In doubles, Gaskins teamed, with Jay Huff to down East Carteret’s Davis and Johnson, 9-7. In the next round, Gaskins and Huff were ousted by Pagnano and Anthony from West Carteret, 8-3. Prior to the tournament, the Eagles dropped their final two matches of the season to West Carteret 9-0 and East Carteret 7-2. Michael Lambert defeat ed Ronald Jones in the championship game 21-8 and was awarded the trophy. Other participants in the tourney included Eric Hill and David Squires. The trophy is a “travel ing trophy” and will be awarded to the “Champ” each month at the tournament. The games are great fun, and more of the teenagers are encouraged to attend the “Fun House” and participate in these activities. Sports by Rick Caniipfi Farm Life students win by Mrs. B. H. Mitchell NEW BERN -Thirteen students in Mrs. E. B. Hill’s EMR Class at Farm Life Elementary School won blue ribbons for first place in the Special Olympics held on April 15 in New Bern. The event was sponsored by the Craven County Special Olympics Committee chaired by Matt Hooker. In addition to the blue ribbons, twenty students won red ribbons for second while three other students won green ribbons for third.
