C. - Thursday, May 16, 1980 12 Pages 20 Cents OVERTURNS - This car reportedly overturned three times on Sunday evening at about 7:45 p.m. The Driver, Milton Roach of Rt. 1, Grifton, was injured in the crash. According: to Higrhway Patrol reports, Roach’s vehicle, a 1974 Javelin, New school plans near ready VANCEBORO - The architect has almost completed plans for the Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary School accord ing to Farm Life Principal Richard Bowers. Bowers told the gathering at the Annual Farm Life School Alumni Banquet that the plans should be complete sometime in the very near kfuture with construction to possibly begin sometime this fall or late summer. He added that the plans call for renovation of the gymnasium and auditor ium buildings. The present shop building which now houses classrooms will be completely renovated and turned into a hew, modern lunchroom. The former Home Economics Building which presently houses the school’s library will be converted into a remedial learning center Bowers explained. In front of that building a brand new administration building would be constructed. In what is now the school bus parking lot, a brand new class room facility housing grades K through sixth will be built. The new structure will also contain a mondern Learning Center Library, Bowers added. He explained that once the new school is completed, the present Main Building will be torn down. The Main Building, which has undergone many renovations and improvements, wa.« con structed in the early 1913. Bike-A-Thon planned Butch and Mary White has volunteered to lead local residents in organi zing a Bike-A-Thon to be held on June 6, 1980 in Vanceboro for benefit of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Registration is at 10:00 a.m. Cystic fibrosis, the most serious lung-damaging disease, is incurable. One in every 1,600 American children inherits this devastating disease when they receive a gene for it from each of their parents. It is estimated that 10 million Americans are symptomless and unknow ing carriers of the gene which can cause CF in their child. Through research funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Founda tion, a test to identify carriers is being sought and scientists are pursuing a cure or control for cystic fibrosis. Roach was charg:ed with wreckless driving:. by Rick Cannon VANCEBORO - Wil liam Haddock, plant manager for New Bern Oil and Fertilizer Co.’s facility here said Monday that an explosion of the type which occurred last Thursday in New Bern is unlikely to occur here. The New Bern explosion which ripped a four square foot hole in the eight inch thick concrete wall of a grain elevator leaving one employee dead and two others in critical condition in Craven County Hospital is still under investigation. Haddock explained that the cause of the explosion is still undetermined. He added that according to OSHA conditions have to be exactly right for an explosion to occur. Also, the elevator must be in an enclosed area. “Our elevator up here is out in the open,’’ Haddock explained, “It is possible, but extremely unlikely that an explosion could occur here.” ECU graduates 2,857 Fibrosis Center in the United States. These CF Centers specialize in the diagnosis and' care of children with cystic fibrosis and other lung damaging diseases like chronic bronchitis, bron chiectasis, sever asthma and recurrent pnewmonia. GREENVILLE (EGU News Bureau) - Seventeen area graduates were among 2,857 who received degrees at the 71st Commencement at East Carolina Univa-sity last Friday, May 9. Dr. William J. Bennett, executive director of the National Center for the Humanities, delivered the 1980 Commencement Address, in Ficklen Stadium. Graduating with highest honors in the School of Education, Gwendolyn Ipock Morris ofVanceboro was named the 1979-80 Outstanding Senior in the Department of Elementary Education. Jo Carol Barrow of Dover graduated with high honors with aBS degree from the School of Allied Health and Social Professions. Jewel Marie Heath of Cove City received her degree with honors in Early Childhood Education. Also grad uating with honors was Vickie Brinkly Swain of Ernul. Vickie received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Wilcox selected Angela Wilcox of the Spring Garden community was recently selected as a member of the All-Student Marching Ban, USA. The Band will tour Europe this summer. Angela will be unable to attend because she plans to attend the N.C. Governor’s School this summer. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wilcox. Math and Computer Science. Other area graduates included Bruce Haddock, and Wynne Parker, of New Bern, Deborah Gladson, Jeff Cannon, Nancy O’Brien Jones, Irene Townsend. Julia Ellen Whitford, Conchita Caun- ter-Bailey, and Lorraine Jordan (Vanceboro,Mary Beth Stilley of Ernul, Cynthia Wyatt, Hattie Hargett Anderson and Laura Daugherty Anderson of Cove City. Connor named T. R. "Buster” Connor, Jr., F.I.C., of Dover, special representative for the Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society, has been notified by national Woodmen President Nick T. New Berry that he has qualified for the Presi dent’s Cabinet by writing more than two million dollars of insurance protection. His membership in the Multi-Miliionaire Section of the President’s Clubs honors his top-rated performance in member ship protection and service during 1979. Buster will be entitled to wear a gold emblem lapel pin inset with an emerald, emble matic of his accomp lishment.
