Students worked approximately one hour each day during the work week. The student teams rotated the work schedule to include at least three different types of food service. Earlier during the year Mrs. Goleck from the Health Department met with the Food Service students and administered the tuberculin skin test or recommended chest exray, which is necessary to procur the temporary health card needed in this > program. At Granny’s Doughnuts students cooked, glazed, Blled doughnuts, and made sales under the supervision of Mrs. Betty Taylor. The staff at the Berne Restaurant and Mr. Dan Vernelson directed acti vities in cooking and catering group meals. “Bussing tables”, waitres- sing, baking, and assorted kitchen responsibilities were experiences at the Palace Motel supervised by Mr. Frank Wilson and his staff. Students were preparing food for patients, operating the quantity food service equipment, planning menus, carrying trays, serving foods in the hospital cafeteria under the direction of Mrs. A. J. Waters. Special diets, safety and sanitation were even more controlled experiences in the Guard ian Care Nursing home kitchen supervised by Mrs. Lucille Toler. This “on the job” work experience has been a part of the Food Service Program at West Craven High under the direction of Mrs. Evelyn Harrison for the past eight years. The success of the program is evident by the high percentage of graduates continuing in a Food Service related occupation. The program has been successful also because of the cooperation of the New Bern business people who provide experiences in the real “World of Work”. Students participating were Sonya Brunson, Beverly Bryant, Lori Campbell, Shabra Camp bell, Carolina Cook, Wanda Dawson, Iris Dixon, Richard Harris, Lisa Hill, Deborah Jones, Laura King, Tracey Speed, Carolyn Sutton, Bessie Swinson, TVina Swinson, Bonnie tucker, Phyllis Willis.
