JL'jaW Pag* 4 West Craven Highlights May IS, 1980 Patriots trim Eagles in season finale by Alice Warmack Special to the Higrhligrhts MOREHEAD CITY-Two bad throws in the fifth inning opened the door for the West Carteret Patriots as they downed the West Craven Eagles 4-0 here Friday afternoon. The Patriot win avenged two earlier 1 osses to theEagles. It was the final baseball gamefortheEaglesforthis season. The Eagles finished the season 3-10 overall. The teams had battled for four and one-half innings before the Patriots’ Larry S. Smith blasted a base hit. An error on Catcher Dickie Fairburn allowed Smith to get to second. From there Smith stole third. After Barry McGavock struck out, Albert Wadsworth rapped a shot to center which scored Smith. Then Wadsworth stole second. John Collinsworth walked puttingrunners on first and second. A Gray Weeks double torightfield scored Wadswath. Then an error on the third baseman Scott Wood allowed Collins worth and Weeks to score. Head Baseball Coach Lffl’enzo Jones commented that he was proud of his team performance this year. “We were young and inexperienced,” J^nes explained, ‘Wereally mdn’t have the pitching and hitting to be competitive in his league." The Eagles recorded wins over West Carteret twice and Track team eleventh by Rick Cannon Highlights Sports NEW BERN - Rufus Harris placed Rrst in the high hurdles and second in the low hurdles to lead West Craven High to an eleventh place finish in a field of twenty-six teams at the NCHSAA Sectional Track Meet held here last Friday. West Craven as a team scored nineteen points to finish just behind conference runner-up Havelock. Conference winner White Oak finished far back in the field with seven points. Harris will advancetothe Regionals to be held Thursday May 16 at Wilson FikeHigh School in Wilson, in both the lows and the highs. His time of 14.8 seconds in the high hurdles tied the West Craven High School record in the event. In the low hurdles, Harris was clocked in 20.4 seconds. He placed sixth in the long jump with aleap of 21' 9 ".West Craven’s only other place was Kenny Wesley. Wesley cleared 6' 2" in the high jump, good enough far fourth nlace. Two area students tabbed "He who has health has hope and he who has hope has everything." Proverb KINSTON - Judy Gas kins of Cove City and Brenda Taylor of Dover were initiated into the Omicron Rho Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa last Tuesday night. The two were among fifteen students inducted into the honorary fraternity. They won the awards in the nine year old division. In the local contest held on Monday, April28, Scott had the fastest car. Second place in that race went to Jonathan Taylor and Wane Barrow won third place. Scott is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Gaskins, Wane is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Barrow, and Jonathan is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Taylor, Jr. The boys are in the third grad at Farm Life Elementary School.
