Sydney French of Jasper is the New Craven
County Commissioner's Chairman. Mr. French
comes to the job with prior experience as Board of
Commissioners' Chairman. He served as Board
Chairman during the tenure of theprior Craven
County Board of Commissioners.
Roger Forrest of Vanceboro is the new vice-
chairman.

Special Proclamation
At the Little Swift Creek Volunteer Fire
Department Dinner last weeked Mrs. Evelyn
Wetherington of Caton was presented a special
proclamation from the LSCVFD as follows:
Because of her outstanding efforts which resulted in
raising monies in excess of one thousand dollars in
behalf of the Little Swift Creek Volunteer Fire
Department, at their meeting held during the month of
November in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and
eighty-three, members of this fire department
unanimously and udth great enthusiasm recommended
that their department President officially and publicly
cite Mrs. Evelyn Wetherington for her superlative
performance. Mrs. Wetherington’s unselfish efforts
were responsible for the purchase of chairs for use in the
training and meeting room of the Little Swift Creek
Volunteer Fire Department’s Caton Station.
Due to the fire department’s policy of making this
facility available to the respective residents of Antioch,
Askins, Cotton and Emul for educational and
recreational classes and other civic gatherings, these
communities have since benefitted from Mrs.
Wetherington’s efforts.
Senator Joe Thomas made the presentation with
words of praise for the Volunteer Program that
Governor Jim Hunt has started throughout the state of
North Carolina.

Breaks Ground
Wheat, First Securities held a ground breaking
ceremony today for their new facility to be constructed
in downtown New Bern.
"We are pleased to be in historic downtown New
Bern to serve this area” said Harold Bissett, Manager
of the local office.
Present at the ceremony was Tom Looney, Regional
Vice President and .John Sherman, Area Manager of
Wheat; First Securities; Leander Morgan, Mayor Pro-
Tem, and Dell Ipock, Vice Chairman of Swiss Bear,
Inc. ,
Wheat, First Securities is headquartered in
Richmond, Virginia with 61 offices in the Virginias,
the Carolines, and the Metropolitan, Washington,
D.C. area.
The two story brick structure will be completed
March of 1983 and will contain 3,600 square feet.
The office will be staffed with four brokers and two
support personnel, according to Bissett.
V^eat, First Securities is a member of the New
York Stock Exchange, American Stock Exchange,
Chicago Board of Trade and other exchanges.
Municipal bonds, taxable fixed income securities,
options, commodities, mutual funds and annuities are
dealt in by Wheat, First Securities.
The office will be equipped with the latest telephone
and computer controlled terminals for market
information and financial analysis.
Bissett is a native of Henderson and has worked with
.Wheat, First Securities for the past three years. He
and his wife Betty have two sons, Harold III age 7 and
William age 6.

Ground Breaking for Wheat Securities
Football Contest—14th
Week
Hubert Perry and Dennis Gentry, Jr. tied for first
place during the 14th week of our Football Contest
winning |10 each and 3 points; 2nd place went to
Jimmy Huff, $10 and 4 points. Reginald Lancaster
placed 3rd, $4 and 2 points.
Top two money winners are: Tracey Perry $60 and
Jimmy Huff $47.
Jimmy Huff remains point leader with 48 points.
Mr. John Everington added to comments by saving,
“I wish to add my personal acknowledgement and
sincere thanks for the constant support and assistance
you, Evelyn, and your husband Joseph, have offered
during an(j subsequent to the construction^ the Caton

Volunteer Fire Department
Holds Annual Dinner
Volunteer work is vital to North Carolina stated
Senator Joe Thomas at the annual LSCVFD dinner
last Saturday night at the Caton Fire Station. He
further complimented the group for the fine job they
are doing for the communities in Craven County.
Representative Gerald Anderson added that the
volunteer work of the firemen is saving the county a
tfemendous amount of tax money and keeping the tax
rate down. County Commissioner Roger Forrest
commented that the commissioners are supporting the
volunteer firemen’s program and that plans are almost
complete to install the 911 telephone emergency
system in the county, which would link up citizen's
calls to the sheriff's department, the rescue units, and
the fire departments in the county.
Other items presented at the dinner were the
department update by Mr. Gilbert Arthur Whitford
III. Mr. Whitford stated the following items have been
accomplished during 1983: addition of a dump tank
and a Newton valve; monitors for two firemen; two
new turn out suits; new hose, 2% "to fit fire hydrants at
Antioch station ; new tables and chairs for Caton
Station; new water cooler for Caton Station; night light
at Caton Station; and fund raising from dinners and
suppers reached in excess of $6600. He complimented
the group on a job well done.
A special presentation was made to Mrs. Evelyn
Wetherington by Senator Joe Thomas for her
outstanding help in getting the chairs and tables for
the Caton Fire Station.
Mr. Henry Sermons, Craven County Fire Marshall,
installed the incoming LSCVFD officers for 1984.
They are Line Officers: Chief Gilbert A. Whitford III;
Assistant Chief John Everington; Lieutenant Ikie
Gaskins; Station Captains - Billy Gaskins, Antioch
Station; Douglas Whitford, Askin Station; Keith
Fulcher, Caton Station; Administrative Officers:
Gilbert M. “Buddy” Whitford, President; Keul
Whitford, Secretary; Essie Mae Whitford, Treasurer;
and Terry Gaskins, Special Treasurer.
Special guests for the occasion were: Senator and
Mrs. Joe Thomas, Rep. and Mrs. Gerald Anderson,
Commissioner and Mrs. Roger Forrest, Fire Marshall
and Mrs. Henry Sermons, Mr. and Mrs. Richard
Cannon (representing The Highlights), Mrs. Joseph
Wetherington and Mr. and Mrs. Kirby Norman.
The group enjoyed a delicious dinner of barbecue,
slaw, hush puppies, cake and tea. The barbecue was
