A first for West Craven High School went off with very few problems. One of the highlights for the students was being transported from West Craven to The Lakeside Restaurant on Highway 17 to compete in the Restaurant Marketing Event. The comments from the coordina tors in charge of this event were “those people really had it together out there and everything went like clock work.” The judges for the event were Scott and Carol Straus, co-owners of the Lakeside; Sharon Bland, owner of Vera’s Diner; (Sharon was a former DECA student); Ellen Freeman of Harbourside Restaurant; and Brenda Anderson, representing The Flame. The special machines, for laminating auto dashboards and door molding, are being assembled in the center building and are about one- half completed. Richardson seems excited about being in Vanceboro. He states he has found the community to be one of support and very cooperative. For example, applications have far exceeded expectations. Applications of qualified people are still being accepted by the company. The company’s main job will be working with plastics, thermal laminating with heat and pressure, and hot stamping transfer of foil to plastic. Finished products are to be shipped from the Vanceboro plant daily to meet the requirements of the auto makers. At present, Richardson states that connecting truck lines from Vanceboro to the auto maker is giving them a small problem that hopefully can be worked out to the satisfaction of auto makers in distant states. Future plans are to take a cautious look at the local situation and add personnel as needed until the plant will probably have over 60 employees. The plant’s present location is temporary and plans are to relocate in a new company building in the Vanceboro area. Jacksonville Sr. High Ist place winner. A group met recently to discuss organization of the Festival Commission. Those present were Gwendolyn Morris, and Becky Hughes from Jr. Woman’s Club, Clyde Hodges from Rescue Squad 15, George Dimick from Rotary Club, Richard Cannon, from Highlights, and Jim Smith from Volunteer Fire Department. Most of the discussion centered around how to keep the Strawberry Festival a permanent annual event in Vanceboro. It was decided that the Jr. Woman’s Club would keep a member on the Festival Commission since they had pioneered the event and would try to keep it active from year to year with the help of all the community. Another meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night 7:30 on February 21 at Vanceboro Firehouse. Everyone in the area is invited. All Churches, Civic Groups, Youth Groups, Fire Rescue Department, and Merchants, should attend the meeting. The hope is to make the festival bigger and better each year. With the combining of Rescue Squad Day and The Strawberry Festival, it is hoped that it will be a big, big, festival and a big, big, success.
