Page 10, West Craven Highlights, March 1, 1984 FORT MRS. B.H. MITCHELL BARNWELL The regular first Sunday pastorial service of St. Edwards will be observed as usual on Sunday. Elder William Waters will deliver the morning message and “The Voices of Tomorrow” will render the music. Everyone is cordially invited to come and worship with the church family. * « * « Hi The pastor and members of the Alum Spring Disciples of Christ Church will be observing, Quarterly Meeting on Saturday night and Sunday March 3-4. Everyone is invited to share in the worship services with them. « ♦ ♦ « ♦ St. John’s A.M.E. Zion Church group is reminding everyone to come by and enjoy a fish or barbecue dinner with them on Saturday, March 3rd at 10:00 a.m. A small donation will be asked for the plates. A flea market will be in progress also. Proceeds will be for the building fund of the church. * * If * Mr .and Mrs. George Kilpatrick, Sr., were honored by their children on Saturday night at the Holiday Inn in Kinston, N.C. A dinner was served in honor of their “Golden Wedding Anniversary.” Four generations attended, several relatives, and a few friends. Rev. and Mrs. Isaac Dancy were among the guests, and they made it known to the group that they had reached their Golden Wedding Anniversary also. m t * m A reception honoring Governor James B. Hunt, Jr., was held on Thursday evening at the H.J. MacDonald School in New Bern, N.C. It was well attended with people from Craven, Jones and Pamlico counties. The governor was quite at ease as he stood in the receiving line to greet the supporting democrats. Soon the time passed and Governor Hunt approached the platform to talk about some things that need attention as he seeks a seat in the U.S. Senate. First he stated that “I believe in an America that can prosper.” (1) He states “that jobs are needed” (2) Huge deficits caused our economy to fall. (High interest rates add to problems) (3) Think of teachers and better schools. He also said that he has seen the National test scores have been higher and drop outs are less since he has been governor. Governor Hunt says that it is his desire to work for all people including the senior citizens. He even mentioned that one senior citizen told him that she was in her eighties Thursday night. >l 111 * « « The Moore’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church of LaGrange had as guest on Sunday afternoon the Elizabeth City State University’s Gospel Choir in concert. The choir sang many beautiful selections with several numbers especially related to Black History. The young people thanks the people for inviting them and asked for continued support. Visitors from many surrounding areas attended. Mrs. Eva M. Hawkins of Kinston, N.C. Mrs. B.H. Mitchell and Mr. John Z. Smith of Ft. Barnwell were among those in attendance. ^************************»*»*#»#*##»##»»»#»»»»»#»#»»##»»##»##»^»»»»/ 2 liter Vanceboro Pharmacy 4-H Area Favorite Food Show Five Craven County 4-H’ers participated in the 4-H Area Favorite Food Show on February 11 in Jacksonville. They were in competition with 4-H’ers from Onslow, Jones, Carteret, and Pamlico counties. The competition involved knowing the nutritional value of their dishes, flavor, appearance, place setting and menu planning, just to name a few. The 4-H’ers received ribbons and the top three winners from the Basic four food groups. Junior and Senior division, received cash awards. Here is how our 4-H’ers placed and the dish they prepared: William Baker of the Vanceboro Triangle Club, Junior Milk, Quiche Beeftek, 4th place. Dianne Gavin of James City, Senior Milk, Cheese Cake, 3rd place. Christ! Legget of the Oaks EFNEP, Vanceboro, Junior Bread and Cereal, Spaghetti Cheese Pie, 4th place. Carmel ita Dawson, Tuscaro- ra. Junior Fruits and Vegetables, Marinated Vegetables, 4th place. Angela Coward, New Bern, Senior Meat, Chef Salad, 2nd place. Two 4-H volunteers helped judge the event. They were: Jackie Mead and Sarah Blakely both of Havelock. After the judging, everyone had a chance to taste all of the delicious dishes that were prepared by the 4-H’ers. ♦"4 In a Saturday morning blaze recently, Mir. Earl Taylor lost his mobile home. Mr. Taylor suffered severe burns in the blaze and was transported to Pitt Memorial Hospital by the Vanceboro Rescue Squad 16. He received treatment there for ten days before being transferred to Veteran’s Hospital. Cleve’s Grocery in Vanceboro was visited by a car driven by Andy Maxey. Damage was done to window, structure, and gas pump.
