IS, CHURCH Pentecostal News Continued from pagfe 4 District Youth Rallies Teen Talent Miss Lynda Kay Evans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Evans of Vanceboro, N.C., represented the Vanceboro Pentecostal Holiness Church as a contestant in the District Youth Rallies Teen Talent. The Rally was held at the First P.H. Church, New Bern, N.C. Lynda placed 1st and will complete at other levels at a later date. She performed very well. Her talent was keyboard. She played “What A Difference You’ve Made In My Life.” We are very proud of Lynda’s dedication. ^^Miss Lynnette Wiley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Edwards, flnnceboro, N.C., performed in the Solo Division. She sang Consider The Lillies” and did a wonderful job. She placed 1st runner up. We are also very proud of Lynnette because she is such a dedicated young lady. Winners of the First Attendance Award—Kindergarten class directed by Mrs. Linda Lee and Mrs. Marlene Copeland were the proud recipients of the Vanceboro United Methodist Church Sunday School Attendance Award. Each month the name of the class in Sunday School that has the best attendance will be placed on the plaque displayed in the church vestibule.- Children’s Council Proposals The North Carolina General Assembly has allocated approximately $51,000 in Community Based Alternative (CBA) funds and $9,000 in Juvenile Justice Deliquency ^Kvention (JJDP) funds to ‘^^Plven County. These funds will be spent for children’s programs in Craven County during the fiscal year beginning July 1, 1984. The Craven County Council for children is accepting . applications for these funds now. To be considered eligible for CBA and JJDP funds, proposals should be written for crisis intervention services, prevention services, or treatment services to children ages 7 to 17 who are at risk of becoming delinquents. Applications and guidelines the use of these funds may Tre obtained by contacting Lee Rouse, Developmental Evalua tion Center, 2717 Neuse Blvd., New Bern (633-3777). All proposals must be submitted to Mr. Rouse no later than 5 p.m., Monday, March 12. Five programs are currently supported by these funds: Big Brothers-Big Sisters of the Lower Neuse, Inc., Mental Health Services to the Juvenile Court (Neuse Center), the Alternative Learning Centers (in-school suspension pro grams) at J.T. Barber School, Havelock Middle School, H.J. MacDonald School and West Craven Middle School, Emergency Foster Care (Dept, of Social Services) and the Juvenile Restitution Program. The Council for Children is an advisory committee to the Craven County Board of Commissioners and is composed of professionals and interested citizens working with children. IN MEMORY GERTRUDE E. LANCASTER West Craven Highlights. March 15, 1984, Page S “Life & Breath” Gertrude Ewell Lancaster, 90, of 4517 West Fairway Drive, died Sunday at Britt Haven Nursing Home in New Bern. Graveside service was 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Bern Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. C. Edward Sharp officiating. Burial was in New Bern Memorial Cemetery. She is survived by her daughter, Anna L. Askews of New Bern; two sisters, Eva Edwards of New Bern and Lena Dixon of Charlotte; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Lancaster was a member of United Daughters of the Confederacy, Order of the Eastern Star and an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church. EARL B. WILLIAMS Earl Bryan Williams, 60, of Vanceboro R-1, died Saturday at Pitt Memorial Hospital. Funeral was Monday, March 12, at 2 p.m. at Paul Funeral Home Chapel in Washington with the Rev. Paul Duckett officiating. Burial was in the Oakdale cemetery. He is survived by his widow, Bertha Foy Williams; three sons, Larry B. Williams of Chamblee, Ga., Gary D. DONNA P. JARMAN Donna Pauline Jarman, 16, died Sunday at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston. Funeral was 2 p.m. Tuesday at Chapel of Gainer-Howard Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Fussell officiating. Burial was in Pinelong Memorial Park Cemetery. She is survived by her brother, Nat'Jarman of the home; her sister. Fay Jarman of the home; her mother, Linda Jarman Sparrow of the home; ' and her maternal grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Furney Daton White of Dover. She was a member of Mosley Creek F.W.B. Church and former member of the Girl Scouts and was a student at West Craven High School. SAMUEL JOHNSON, SR. EDNA M. JOHNSON Samuel Levi Johnson, Sr., 53, and his wife, Edna M. Johnson, 30, both of Mobile Ala. were killed Wednesday in an automobile accident in Pensacola, Fla. Graveside service for both was 11 a.m. Tuesday at New Bern Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Denver Blevins officia ting. Burial was in New Bern Memorial Cemetery. He survived by three sons, S.L. “Buddy” Johnson Jr., of Vanceboro, Zeb Johnson of Kinston, and Sam Johnson of New York; six daughters, Debra White of Kinston, Sarnia Smith of Tarboro, Janell- Johnson, Jennifer Johnson, Edie Johnson and Kim Johnson, all of New York; two brothers, Carl Johnson and Junius Johnson, both of New Bern; two sisters, Amy Wilson of New Bern and Esther Pope of Mooresville; and nine grandchildren. Cypress Glen Retirement Community bids in approximately three The Greenville Cypress Glen Methodist Retirement Com munity which will accom modate 125 full time residents with the completion of Phase I, is now well underway and plans are in the works which will enable Cypress Glen to be occupied by early 1986. The architect for the project is now completing the plans which should be readied for months. Construction should begin in early summer dependent upon a successful capital gains campaign. Trek Cyclists To Tour Coast Williams of Atlanta, Ga., and David Earl Williams of the home; three daughters, Marlene W. Jones of Nags Head, Aileen W. Ross of Ayden and Jolene Williams of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; two sisters. Evelyn W. Vick of Greenville and Ernestine W. Nix of Virginia Beach, Va.; his mother, Callie Beavers Williams of Vanceboro R-1; and five grandchildren. The American Lung Association of North Carolina is inviting bike enthusiasts to join them for a two-day, two- night bicycle tour of scenic, historic southeastern coastal North Carolina, April 13-15. The 50-mile a day BIKE TREK will follow a circular tour along the Cape Fear River with an overnight stop on the Atlantic Ocean at Long Beach and return via the ferry and the coastal highway. The BIKE TREK has three purposes: 1. to demonstrate the value of clean air and healthy lungs, 2. to promote bicycling as a pollution free means of travel and recreation and 3. to raise funds for ALANC programs to prevent and control pulmonary diseases. Any person who is 16 years of age or older and in good physical condition is invited to participate. Persons under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Bike Trekkers are expected to supply their own gear and bicycle in good working condition. They are also expected to secure donations totaling a minimum of $200 which will be a contribution to the Lung Association. Only 150 riders can be accommodated on the TREK. Lodging and meals en route will be provide by ALANC as well as leadership and support vehicles (sag- wagons) to carry luggage and spare bicycle parts. All participants will receive an official Trekker T-shirt and patch, compliments of Bud Light. Complimentary weekend packages for two will be provided to Trekkers with the highest amount of sponsorship money collected prior to the TREK weekend. The weekend resort packages include the Blockade Runner at Wrightsville Beach, Inn on the Plaza in Asheville, Foxfire Inn and Country Club of Pinehurst and Mid Pines Resort, Southern Pines. In addition, gift certificates will be given worth from $25 to $100 each to Trekkers depending on their total sponsoring contribution.
