Pag9 8, West Craven Highlights, March 15, 1984 SPORTS By RICHARD D ELIA West Craven Bounces Back The West Craven Baseball team is off to its best start in a long time. The Eagles lost a heart breaking defensive struggle to New Bern and then a 8-0 thrashing by Washing ton. The Eagles then took hold of their bats and whipped Dixon 6-0. Against Washington no thing would go right for the Eagles. Randy Elks was pitching well, but the Pam Pack’s bat wouldn’t stop swinging. Coach Steve Stroud pointed out a Washington batter that batted out of turn and Washington had two outs with a 2-0 score but ran the score up to 6-0 before the inning was over. When the Eagles forced Dixon, they turned the tables. Dixon couldn’t buy an out as the Eagles rolled up their 6-0 lead. John McLawhorn picked up the win for the Eagles in his first start of the 1984 season. New Bern Tracksters Off and Running The New Bern Track team had an easy victory 116-28 over Bertie Friday. The only event New Bern didn’t take first in was the pole vault. While in the long jump the 100, the 200 meter dashes, and the mile, the Bears took, first, second and third. Authuf Grady had two firsts: one in the shot put with a 47'8" toss and in the discus with a 120'2" throw. Another impressive showing was Chris Atkins in the 110 meter high hurdles with a 15.1 seconds time and a 41.4 seconds first in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles. Thomas Carr had the best showing of the day by leaping 6'6" in the high jump for a first place and sprinting to a first in the 100 meter dash. After that Carr anchored the Bears 400 meter relay team to a first place. New Bern Baseball Team 2-1 The New Bern Bearsopened their baseball season by losing to Havelock 5-1, but they have been rolling ever since. The Bears faced a tough West Craven team and pulled off a 3- 2 victory. William White pitched for West Craven, while Robbie Harris was on the mound for New Bern. The Bears traveled to Kinston and came from behind in the fifth inning to down Kinston 5-3. The winning pitcher was Bryan Lee. Jay Phifer led all hitters having a perfect 3-3 record. I Eagles fire away at tourney play from the free throw line, but alas the minutes slipped away and the Eagles didn’t win the game. nBirsiowi SCHOOL NEWS Pre-School Registration All children who will enter kindergarten or first grade in the New Bern-Craven County Schools in August, 1984, need to pre-register prior to the opening of school.
