The tournament field featured eight of the top-notched teams from surrounding areas to raise funds for the A.S.A. Hall of Fame. The “Continental Angels” defeated Encee Chemicals 18-10, Cherry Point All-Stars 15-6 and Harvey’s 6-3 to reach the championship game undefeated. The Angels again faced a determined Cherry Point All-Star team who fought their way out of the loser’s bracket to challenge for the title. The Angels once again used the “big inning” and stellar defense to defeat the All-Stars 10-8 and win the tourney. The Angels homered five times on the bats of Mike Deleone and Lynn Gaboon with three and two homers respectively. The Angels leading hitters were Johnny Stevenson .786 Phil Russell, .750, Cleve Provost .727, “Rooster” .571 and Dennis Gray .531. Superb offensive and defensive performances from several of the Angels stood out in their quest for the tournament championship, but the overall defensive and offensive performance was that of Johnny Stevenson, voted by his teammates as the tournament MVP. Angels Capture 2nd Place For the second time in one work, Ron’s Angels came home with ^he “gold.” The Angels competed in the Kinston Fairgrounds Invitational this week-end and captured second place in the tourney. With only a two day break in between their Hall of Fame tournament victory, the Angels fought their way to the championship game. In doing so, the Angels split a pair of games with Class-D World Qualified, Gray Ridge. The Angels were edged out in the championship game 10-7, by tournament champion Neuse Sand & Gravel. Leading hitters for the Angels were Dale White, .692, John Hawkins .615, Phil Russell .571, Dennis Mooring .571 and Clay Jordan .538. Southport King Mackerel Derby The Southport King Mackerel Derby has named Harold Anthony Brusher, marine fisheries biologist from Panama City, Florida to catch, tag, and release the ten fish for the 3 day Derby Memorial Day weekend. The angler catching the winning fish will receive $50,000.00 per year for 10 years. The Southport King Mackerel Derby will see 10 fish caught, tagged and released within five miles of the Cape Fear River by Mr. Brusher early in the event. There will be the half-million dollar first prize, two second place prizes of $1,000.00 each and seven third place prizes of $500.00 each awarded during the contest May 26-27-28.
