Florida Adventures By SANDY WIGGINS The Bi-Chem-Phi of West Craven High School traveled to Orlando, Florida on Friday, March 30, for three fun-filled days. The group arrived on Saturday morning and spent the day browsing in Florida Festival, which is a shopping center. On Sunday and Monday, the group wtent to Disney World and the Epcot Center. Disney World contains six lands of jun, fantasy, and entertain- j j^Knt for people of all ages. For '^Sample, Adventure Land contains adventures in far-off lands while Frontier Land is full of colonial, history. Then there is Fantasy Land where all of your storybook dreams SPORTS come true. Tomorrow Land takes you on a trip in the future. Finally you return to Main Street USA to browse through the shops. Epcot Center consists of two dimensions: Future World and World Showcase. Future World supplies you with new ideas in communications, energy, transportation, and the Land for you to explore. The World Showcase contains nine nations showing their accomplishments and cul tures. The group returned on Tuesday. Everyone enjoyed the trip and would like to thank Mrs. Whitford, the Bi- Chem-Phi sponsor, for making it, possible. Busy Month For Jr. Civitans By ALLEN THOMAS The Junior Civitan Club of West Craven High School has been very busy this month and has important plans for May also. On April 12, member volunteered to participate in the Craven County Special Olympics and from April IS IS, many attended the North Carolina District East Convention at Wrightsville Beach. On April 19-20 they plan to hold Easter parties at the Caswell Center in Kinston and the pediatric wing of the Craven County Hospital. On May 22, a banquet is planned for the installation of next year’s officers and induction of new members. The Junior Civitan has become very important to their community and West Craven with their special service projects. Early Chinese chronicles mentioned that the Chinese used rockets as weapons against the Mongols in 1232 A.D. Special Olympics Held For Physically & Mentally Handicapped By JANE SMITH On Thursday, April 12, the Special Olympics were held for physical and mentally handicapped citizens in Craven County. The event was held at New Bern High School. Members of the West Craven Jr. Civitan Club attended this event and-helped as volunteers. Special Olympics are held each year to involve handi capped people in athletic events. Some of the events included: the 50-yard dash, the softball throw, and the frisbee throw. The Jr. Civitans helped the particpants get to their event and cheered.them during their competition. They also helped blow up balloons that were set loose during the opening ceremony while others were given to the kids. At the end of each competition, ribbons were awarded to each of the participants. Although everyone couldn’t come in first, all were winners because of the effort they put forth. Cystic Fibrosis JBike-A-Thon The New Bern Jaycee-ettes will sponsor a bike-a-thon on Saturday, May 5th to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Founda tion. The ride will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will take place at Yarmouth Street, off Race track Road in New Bern. Funds raised at the bike-a- thon will be used by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to help support its nationwide programs of research, treatment and education. Two Cystic Fibrosis Centers located in North Carolina (at UNC School of Medicine- Chapel Hill and Duke Medical Center in Durham) provide diagnostic services, conduct research and professional education and treat CF patients. The Dodgers’ Fernando Valenzuela is the first pitcher to win the Cy Young award and Rookie of the Year in the same year. He won them in 1981.
