II DOrtS« * “The Year of the Eagle” Once again the time approaches for another exciting year of West Craven sports. This year promises to be a successful one for West Craven. West Craven’s football team returns 17 players from the 1983 team and with the added support of last year’s championship J.V. team, the Eagles are being considered as a pre-season favorite for a conference crown. Eagle basketball has traditionally been an area power. With many outstanding players returning from last year’s varsity team and adding members from last year’s championship J.V. team, t^ Eagles are sure to be on top. ^|fhe Varsity baseball team finished the season in spectacular ^le. Last year was the first year of J.V. baseball and those young men proved they could play with anyone. The 1985 version of Eagle baseball should prove to be exciting and successful with veteran players returning from the varsity and some, new and rising stars coming up from the J.V. program. That’s just an overview of three of West Craven’s athletic teams from last year not to mention volleyball, softball, track, tennis and wrestling. All of whom had a successful year and are sure to improve in 1984-85. Of course, we can’t forget those beautiful West Craven cheerleaders who help urge our teams on to victory. This year has been designated by the West Craven Athletic Department as "The Year of the Eagle.” We feel as though this should be an outstanding year for Eagle sports and we want you to join in the winning spirit. You can be a part of each and every moment of Eagle sports by purchasing a season ticket. For $25.00 an individual may attend all athletic events sponsored by West Craven High School. As a pregame recap the stats of last season’s clash is listed below. This game seemed to set the tone for 1983. East Carolina, absent from all the pre-season polls, threw a scare into No. 7 Florida State as the game was not decided until the final minutes. After leading much of the game, the Pirates found themselves trailing by one point with 4:36 remaining. On a third-and-three from the ECU 30-yard line, ECU quarterback Kevin Ingram broke loose for a 48-yard gain to the Florida State 32. But as he was hit from behind Ingram lost control of the ball, and the Seminoles recovered the fumble. The Pirates opened up a 17- 13 lead after one quarter as the ECU offense moved at will all night. Thirteen more second- quarter points had the Pirates sitting on a 30-27 halftime lead as ECU rolled up 233 yards of total offense in the first 30 minutes. East Carolina jumped out quick in the second half as Henry Williams returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. Williams had returned a punt 56 yards for a touchdown just before the close of the first half. But three Florida State touchdowns in the final two quarters proved to be the difference. The Pirates never regained possession of the ball after Ingram’s fumble as the Seminoles ran out the final 3:39 for the victory. East Carolina, who suffered a 63-7 loss at the hands of the Seminoles two years earlier, ran up 390 yards of total offense while Florida State totalled 590. On the night records were set for most points scored both teams (93) and most touchdowns scored both teams (13).
