Septembe 13. 1984 School Year e' * 1^5' Summer, for all practical happening at some community Harris, Sylvia Jones Mullla Five entering medical students at the East Carolina University School of Medicine have been selected as the first recipients in the school’s new Brody Scholar Program in Medicine. Established last May to recognize scholastic excellence in medical education, the program provides sizable scholarships for the students through their four years of study at the medical school. Four of the students are named Brody Fellows and receive scholarships of $2,000 each year. The fifth student, named the Brody Scholar for demonstrating superior ability and potential, receives a $7,500-a-year stipend for four years of study at ECU. According to Dr. William E. Laupus, ECU vice chancellor and dean of the medical school, the Brody Scholar for the class of 1988 is George E. Crawley III of Wilson, N.C. Named Brody Fellows from the Class of 1988 are Mark B. Batts of Watha, N.C., Peter N. Purcell of Pikeville, N.C., Rebecca N. Daniel of Greenville, N.C. and Sylvia Jones Mullis of Dover, N.C. Recipients of Brody scholarship are selected on the basis of academic performance, leadership potential and a personal interview. Preference is given to residents of Eastern North Carolina and students who are interested in practicing primary care medicine in the state, preferably in the eastern region. The Brody Scholar Program in Medicine is named for the Brody Family of Kinston and Greenville, longtime supporters of the ECU School of Medicine. At the time of this report, officials at the College were optimistic that this quarter could be another record enrollment for the College. Fall quarter 1983 had an enrollment of 1847 students. On Wednesday, September 5, Dr. Steve Redd, Dean of the College, held a General Faculty/lnstructional Staff meeting at which time deans introduced those new instructors who had been hired for their respective divisions. They are: Joanne Bills, Accounting; Jessie Lee Heath, Cosmetology in Havelock; Phillip Faircloth, Business Computer Programming; William Sealy, Electronics; Wayne McCain, Electronics in Havelock; Frank B. Wade, Masonry; Jacqueline Elliott, Mathematics; Joy Carawan, Nursing (ADN); and Betty 0 Harris, Visiting Artist. The' cosmetology position is a new 3/4 time position; the two electronics positions are new full-time positions replacing part-time positions; the masonry and the mathematics positions are new full-time positions; and the accounting, business computer program ming, nursing, and visiting artist positions are new full time replacement positions for instructors who had left the College. This brings the full time instructional staff to 48. 1984-85 looks like it will be great year for CraveWr' Community College. Why not be a part of it?
