Page 16, West Craven Highlights, September 27, 1984 Number Is Key A person's Social Security number is the key to his or her lifetime protection under Social Security, L,F. Howell, Social Security manager in New Bern, North Carolina, said recently. All earnings that a person has over his or her working lifetime are recorded underthat number. If any incorrect number is used, that person may not get proper credit for all earnings. People should always take their Social Security card with them when they get a new job and make sure that their employer copies the number just as it is shown on the card, Howell said. People should keep a record of their number in a safe place. Then, if the original card is lost, a new card with the same number can be obtained easier than if the number were not known. Also, a person applying for a replacement Social Security card will have to provide documentary evidence of identity, Howell said. A person born outside the United States needs evidence of current United States citizenship or legal alien status. If a person ever becomes aware that he or she has more than one Social Secuirty number, the individual should contact any Social Security office right away. The people there will help get the situation cleared up so that the numbers are cross-referred and the person gets full credit for all earnings. It is against the law for a person to use someone else’s number. It is also against the law to give false information when getting a number. Penalties include a fine or jail sentence or both. It is a good idea for a person to check his or her Social Security record every 3 years or so to make sure that earnings are being correctly reported. This is especially true if a person changes jobs often. Postcard Form SSA-7004 is available for this purpose and can be obtained at any Social Security office. For more information about Social Security numbers, contact the New Bern, North Carolina Social Security office, located at 2822 Neuse Boulevard, New Bern, North Carolina. The telephone number is 638-4101. Weyerhaeuser News Congratulations Congratulations go to Charles A. Withrow, Kent E. Lee, James L. Irby, Robert D. Freeman, Thadeus R. Dunn, Charles H.
