-7® HIGHLIGHTS ■ Sports W. Craven Shuts Out Pamlico, 27-0 By DONNIE PRINCE ECU Pirates Break Losing Streak 4B BAYBORO—West Craven High School continued their winning ways at the expense of the Pamlico County Hurri canes here in Bayboro Friday night. The Eagles took a 14 point lead into the dressing room at half-time and added 13 points in the second half for a 27-0 shutout victory. Head Coach Clay Jordan felt his Eagles were not as sharp as they were two weeks ago against Washington but was still happy with the win. “We did not get the kind of effort from our up front people we would like, but Pamlico had two good linemen," Jordan added "The two week layoff hurt us and we substituted regularly from the beginning." West Craven’s defense did play well. Junior Tackle Morris Jones led a very effective pass rush as the Eagle defensive line got good penetration into the Hurricane backfield. The defense forced five Pamlico turnovers, three fumbles and two interceptions. Pamlico’s first turnover led to an Eagle touchdown. After a Hurricane fumble on their own 36 yard line. West Craven scored on a 13 yard burst by Junior Halfback Mickey Rasberry. The Eagles added a two point conversion when Junior Holder Neal Russell picked up a bad snap from center and passed to Jessie Campbell in the end zone for an 8-0 lead. In the second quarter following another Pamlico turnover. West Craven again more fullback, LaOarryl Nobles going the last 12 yards for the score. The conversion failed and the Eagles held a 14 point lead. Pamlico’s best scoring opportunity came late in the first half when the Hurricanes drove to the West Craven 21 yard line. The drive stalled when Pamlico’s last second pass was intercepted in the end zone. West Craven got a third quarter touchdown following yet another Pamlico fumble. On the fourth play from scrimmage Nobles burst into the secondary and bowled over several Pamlico defenders on his way to a 12 yard touchdown run, his second of the night. This year it was the Eagles turn as Heisman Trophy candidate Doug Flute threw three six touchdown passes to lead his team to 20 victory. BC which started 14 seniors and sixjuniors were simply too much for North Carolina’s young Tar Heels. Flute who got great protection from his offensive line, picked Carolina’s secondary apart. The North Carolina strategy going into the game was to contain Flute but the pass rush never materialized. Flute was sensational completing 28 of 38 passes for 354 yards and six TD’s.
