Continued Continued from Page 1 Copeland, Grover Gaskins, Wilton Edwards, Otis Gatlin, Melvin Adams, Henry Earl Lewis, Lester Hart, Dewey Jordan, Royce Jordan, and Frederick Bryan. Many of these men supported the department by later becoming active officers. Harvey Arthur, representing Askin Ruritan Ciub, was a strong supporter of the department. Pete Hoell was seiected to be the department’s first Chief. The first annual Fireman’s Day heid in Vanceboro, when its popuiation was a mere 842, netted the department $2,100 and donations amounted to $800 bringing in a total of $2,900. It was estimated that over 1500 people ate barbecue at that first Fireman’s Day. The twenty-fifth Fireman’s Day in that same town, but now with a popuiation of 897, took in with donations of Much improvement has been made in the Dept. Six fire trucks and a utiiity truck are now in use; 75 members in the department; the charter was for 60 members; a sub station at Epworth; radios for each member; a fine two story building to house the equipment and a meeting room that is used not only for firemen’s meetings, but for many other community activities; fire fighter suits for each member; a county radio system; and many personal vehicles used to transport firemen to the scenes at the fireman’s own expense. Vanceboro community is proud of its firemen and its fire department and has a right to be. Each fireman is quick to say “If it had not been for the cooperation of community citizens the department couid not have advanced this far. The fire department was an original project of the Vanceboro Civitan Club. Another fine example of the importance of service clubs in a community. A finai note is a statement from Grover Lancaster about the excitement over the new fire truck brought into town from Chicago by Pete Hoeii, Dennis Baiiey, Dewey Jordan and himseif.
