PagejJ/j^t Craven Highlights, October 11, 1984 From The Sidelines; Somebody’s Got To Lo state Knocks Off Georgia Tech The Yellow-Jackets of Georgia Tech got a taste of their own medicine Saturday as the underdog Wolfpack of N.C. State jumped out to a 27- 10 lead and held on for a 27-22 win over the 12th ranked Jackets. State , for the first time in three weeks, was able to use the services of All-American Tailback Joe McIntosh. McIntosh, when he is healthy is probably the best running back in college football today, responded with his finest performance of the season. rushing for 138 yards on 27 carries and one touchdown. The Pack who upped their record to 3-2 for the season took a 10-7 lead into the dressing room at halftime. State came out in the second half and quickly scored on drives of 69 and 84 yards. The Wolfpack scoring was capped off as Mike Coffer knocked down a 22-yard field goal with 6:26 to play. Georgia Tech, suffering their first defeat, slips to 3-1 for the season and 0-1 in the conference. ECU Falls 17-10 The Pirates of East Carolina, off to their worst start under head Coach Ed Emory, traveled to Pittsburgh Saturday in search of their second win of the season. But as has been the case four times earlier this year, the Pirates came up short. The Panthers jumped out to a 14-0 halftime lead as the Pirates twice drove inside the Pitt 20 but failed to score a single point, and when you are 1-4 you can’t afford to do that. ECU did play much better in the second half outscoring Pitt 10-3; however, it was a case of too little too late as the Pirates dropped to 1-5 for the season. ECU next travels to Tulsa in hopes of breaking a two game losing streak. West Craven Hosts N. Lenoir West Craven’s Varsity Football Team starts their “second season” Friday night when they host North Lenoir here in Vanceboro. The Hawks, coming off a 20-7 loss to Currituck, bring a 2-3 record into Friday night's contest. The Hawks run from an I- Formation offense, they utilize the run with the tailback and like to throw the football. West Craven, undefeated after five games are off to their best start ever under Head Coach Clay Jordan. The Eagles are picked as one of the favorites along with Havelock and White Oak to win the Coastai 3-A Conference Championship. West Craven was idle last week and had two weeks to prepare for the conference opener. The Eagles have played very well on defense, putting together one string of 12 consecutive scoreless quarters. The offense has evolved around the big play passing of quarter back Randy Elks, and a bruising ground game led by sophomore fullback Ladaryl Nobles. Game time is 8 p.m. GET AHEAD IN THE CLASSFIEDS 244^)780 Entertainment. That’s what professional sports is all about, and the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres provided all the excitement anyone could stand as the two teams squared off in San Diego to decide the National League Champion ship. The Cubs who swept two games from the Padres in Chicago, traveled to San Diego needing only one win to ensure their first trip to the World Series in 29 years. The Padres, an expansion team in their 15th season, had never won a division championship. Both teams had won respect from fans across the country with their rise to prominence this summer. On Friday night when the teams met for the third time, they were viewing the game from two very different perspectives. Chicago was in the driver’s seat leading two games to none while San Diego was trying to respond from a 2-0 deficit, a feat which had only been performed once in Major League history. In game three the Cubs jumped out to a 1-0 lead before San Diego rallied for three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings for a 7-1 win to send the series to game four, and what a game it was. In game four the roles of the two teams had changed. San Diego, still one game away from elimination, had to win or their season was over. Chicago, which had heid a commanding 2-0 lead needed to put the Padres away in game four, or face the possibility of their own elimination in game five. It was a game both teams desperately needed to win, and the game itself was as good as any you will ever see. This game would see the lead change hands six times before the ninth inning and in that ninth inning and a Southern California hero would supply a memory that the crowd of 68,000 Padre fans would not soon forget, as Padre first baseman Steve Garvey sent a Lee Smith fastball screaming over the right field fence for a 7-5 San Diego win; game 5. 2-2 all even, well not quite. Sure it’s two games a piece but where the Cubs were once in n The control, they are now on verge of being'eliminated position San Diego has escaped from twice already Now, it’s anybody’s champ ionship, and after Chicago jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning it appeared once again to be the Cubs, but as is so true in Baseball, things can change in a hurry. Just as the Cubs had lead in games 2-0 and let it slip away, the Padres would come back In game five and spoil Chicago’s quest for their first divisional champion ship in almost 30 y^^^ winning the right to fac^li American League Champion Detroit Tigers. The Padres won the National League pennant but the real winners were the fans who were fortunate enough to enjoy the performances of these two teams. Someone has to lose in any type of athletic event where success is judged by wins and losses, but no team or individual loses when he gives his best effort, this is the magic of baseball.
