Page 2. West Craven Highlights, November 1, 1984 Opossum By LELA BARROW LONG TIME RESIDENT OF VANCEBORO. Have you ever been Opossum hunting? My friends like for me to write something I did in my young days—iike riding the camel when I went to the Jamestown Exposition in 1907. I was a teenager when I went possum hunting; I was spending the night with Carrie Chapman (Tucker). After supper some neighborhood girls, five or six. came to sit until bedtime, just talking and laughing. Pete. Carrie’s brother, came in and said: “Gals how about going possum hunting—it is a dark night - no moon or stars shinning. I have a feeling, one is sleeping in that old persimmon tree down near the creek about one haif mile from here.” "Ch yes, we have never been possum hunting, that will be fun." He took the old lantern along to give us light. The possum fooled us - he must have chosen another tree that night. Cn our way back home joking and laughing; about half way to the house, Pete whispered to me, "Lela, hang on to me and run.” He yelled out, “ Watch out there's a snake,” and he put out the light. We started running to the house, with me holding on to his arm. The girls screaming, "Wait I can't see"—not knowing which way to run for fear of stepping on the snake, which wasn’t any snake at all. Some experience. Here is a story of Penelope Possum I read in “Life’s Together” that reminds me of some of our difficult days. The possum is hanging upside down with his tail twisted around a tree limb. It Editor: —— — As we all know, this has been a very iong, hard, and often times bitter campaign year. Even though at this point some people have decided they don’t care who wins, we must remember that this election will determine the direction this state will take now and in the years to come. We have a chance this year to send a man to the U.S. Senate who will represent this state and our priorities. A man who has devoted his life to public service and has shown his true commitment to this state. As governor, we have seen Jim Hunt strive to deveiop North Carolina to its fullest potential. He has worked together with peopie in a positive approach to accomp lish things vital to us all. “Hypothermia” In many fall boating accidents, older, experienced fisherman or duck hunters, in smali, reiativeiy unstable boats are the victims. Often they cannot swim, and are not wearing personal floatation devices(PFD), although the law requires that they carry a Coast Guard approved PFD for each person aboard. Suddenly standing or shifting position is often enough to tip the boat and throw one and ail into the water. Their reaction in the next seconds will determine if they live or die. If alcoholic drinks have been consumed, they may not struggle and simply disappear. They may become confused or dis oriented and swim down to drown instead of up. The pain of sudden immersion in cold water may cause others to have a heart attack, lose conscious ness and sink. Others attempt to swim to safety, lose body heat, become exhausted and drown. Hypothermia is a result of the body losing head faster than it can product it, and is genenerally caused by exposure to wind and wetness. Violent shivering, an attempt by the body to generate heat by exercise, indicates the onset of Hypothermia. Confusion, stiffness and slurred speech are other symptoms. Water is an efficient conductor of heat and will remove body heiat We also have a chance to re elect a man to the U.S. Senate. This man is one who has used and abused North Carolina’s seat in the U.S. Senate for too long. Instead of working forthe things vital to the existence of this state, he works for his own personal agenda while at the same time, he puts agriculture, jobs, education and the elderly on a back burner. Jesse Helms and his radical networks have shown in this election that they will stop at nothing in order to achieve their agenda. Jesse Helmssays- he is a man of principle. What kind of a “man of principle” is he to put us through nineteen months of hIS gutter politics aimed at destroying Governor Hunt’s image and manipu lating the minds of our people? has been a difficult day. She couldn’t get the lid off the trash can—no matter how hard she tried - she couldn't get the chicken bones inside. Then the neighbor's dog nipped her ear as she ran from the yard. And last but not least she was almost run over by a car on her way home. What a day! Self-pity - Penelope wished she could roll over and play dead for awhile. Have you ever experienced such a day when everything went wrong? For instance, your clothesline bfoke and dumped the full line of clothes on the wood pile with little chips of wood, and the weather freezing cold? . . . Yes, I have. Well, remember Penelope - To her, things really seemed upside down - she had no one to tell her troubles to - no one to comfort her. God knew how she felt. He knew every gray hair on her body. He was the One who scared the dog away, and moved the car at the last minute so she wasn’t hurt. What looked upside down to Penelope - looked okay to God. Our problems look hard to us but they are not hard for God to solve. He loves us so much. Nothing is impossible to God. He says Trust Me. I knew so little about the Opossum I went to the World Book. I’ll give you some of what I learned. He must sleep in the day and roam for food at night, mostly dark nights. Opossum is the name of primitive animals related to the kangaroo. They have furry bodies, their faces resembling rat faces; the females have an external pouch in the skin of the abdomen. Here 5 to 14 young are suckled for about two months after birth. They find their own way into their mother’s pouch. The Virginia opossum is best known - when full-grown they are about the size of a cat. Peopie bake them - especiaily the white meat - it is considered a rare delicacy. A new-born opossum is about the size of a kidney bean; a teaspoon can hold from 15 to 18. The mother carries her young on her back for several weeks after they leave her pouch. When they can care for themselves she shakes them off. Maybe God cares for them after the mother quits. Voters Maple Cypress Precinct voters wili vote in the Epworth Sub-Station Fire Department Building starting with the November 6th election. For over thirty years this has been done in Curt Wither- jngton’s generai store, prior to that time the voting was heid in Hart’s store, near Maple Cypress Landing, where the precinct received its name. Mr. Bill Joyner was the registrar when that move was made, he held this position until 1970 then Baker Bland was registrar foi lowed by Merlene Bland. Carol Gaskins is the present registrar with Net Dixon as judge and Henrietta Lancaster as assistant. This was the iast precinct in Craven County that voted in a Country store, as was the custom several years ago. The voter could vote, visit with neighbors, and make pur chases all in one stop. Maple Cypress is one of the smailer of Craven County’s twenty four precincts, it serves the Northwestern area of the county. Even though they will vote in the Fire Department, registrar Caroi Gaskins says the voters can still expect the same friendly voting atmosphere that they have become accustomed to. DRIVERS! nnir siomri Let’s remember that when Governor Hunt challenged Senator Helms to stop the out- of-state fundraising and negative campaign tactics. Senator Helms flatly refused. Fortunately, we do have a choice this year. On November 6th let’s show Jesse Helms that North Carolina is no place for his outrageous campaign tactics and his right-wing radical empire. If this type of campaigning works for him in 1984, we’re sure to see a whole lot more of it in the future. At the same time, let’s send a message to the rest of this nation that North Carolina is a very proud, positive, and progressive state ready to help lead this nation to a successful future with Jim Hunt as our United States Senator. Scott Thomaa, Vanceboro much faster than air. Moving around in the water causes blood to flow to the peripheral tissues, creating faster cooling. Wearing a PFD will help in two ways. It lessens the need to move in order to stay afloat, and helps insulate the body from the cold water, reducing heat loss. The areas of the body most affected by cold water are the head, the neck, the sides and the groin where many of the body’s main blood vessels are close to the surface. Although there are several emergency ways.... to treat Hypothermia, the best is to prevent further heat loss and rush the victim to a hospital where professional treatment is available.,., . ..
