Young, of dward D. Jones and Company, an investment firm iocated in New Bern, was guest speaker at the Vanceboro Rotary Ciub on Thursday evening, December 6. Mr. Young briefly outlined the history of his firm to Rotary members. Edward D. Jones and Company was established in 1871 and currently has over 700 offices across the United States. Much of the Company’s success is attributed to its emphasis on conservative investing and its concentration of business in towns and cities with populations under 50,000. The following Little Swift Creek Volunteer Fire Department (LSCVFD) were installed Friday, December 7 at the department's annual Christmas supper. The officers are: Line Officers - Chief- Gilbert Whitford; Asst. Chief - Mike Dearien; Capt. Askin - Douglas Whitford; Lt. Askin - Ikie Gaskins; Capt. Antioch - Billy Gaskins; Lt. Antioch - ve Nelson; Capt. Caton - e Whitford; Lt. Caton - ‘Kieth Fulcher. Administration Officers; President - Buddy Whitford; Treasurer - Essie Mae Whitford; Special Treasurer - Terry Gaskins; Secretary - Bunny Schramm Board of Directors: John Everington, Jimmy Whitford, Roger Wilson, Pete Schramm. A delicious supper of barbecue, cole slaw, hush puppies, and cake squares, coffee, tea, and soft drinks was served. The tables were lecorated with poinsettias on hristmas white tablecloths. Forrest To Head Commissioners Roger Forrest David Young Roger Forrest of Route 1, Vanceboro has been selected by his fellow Craven County Commissioners to chair that group for the next year. Forrest succeeds Sidney French who held the position during 1984. A governing board must select a chairman each year at the first meeting in December and the chairman serves for the following twelve months. Lonnie Pridgen of New Bern was elected vice-chairman to serve during 1985 and Jim Sugg was reappointed county attorney. Forrest, Pridgen, and Sugg were sworn in by Clerk of Court Dorothy Pate at the Monday meeting. The meeting was held at the LSCVFD Caton Station. President Buddy Whitford welcomed members and guests. He then led the group in a prayer, giving thanks for another year in which no firemen were seriously injured. Mrs. Essie Mae Whitford, secretary and one of two lady firefighters in the l,SCVFD, reported that the fire truck will be ready for delivery on or about Feb. 1,1985 and Chief G. A. Whitford and Askin Captain Douglas will travel to Appleton, Wisconsin at that time to accept delivery and drive the unit back to N. C. The new truck is scheduled to be assigned to the Askin station. This new unit with the latest in fire-fighting equipment installed will provide the residents of the LSCVFD and surrounding areas with a department much better equipped than ever before to perform their primary mission - Fire Fighting. VRVFD Banquet Big Success Vanceboro Rural Volunteer recognized the honored gue^ present membership is 7J Fire Department's Annual Banquet was a big success with 148 firemen and guests in attendance. The meal for the banquet consisted of fish, shrimp, oysters, barbecue, chicken, hush puppies, french fries, tea and coffee. One member remarked after the meal that everyone seemed to get plenty to eat and certainly shouldn't go hungry. The Master of Ceremonies was Alton Whitley, a long time member and acting president of the department. He i the honored gue» which included State Repre sentatives, Senator, County Commissioners, Newspaper Pubiisher, and the wives of the members. Fire Chief Stanley Kite made presentations to charter members who were stiil active in the department and praised each of them for the fine job they had done during the past 25 years. Oral Dean Morris gave a history of the VRVFD and said that during the past 25 years the department had signed on over 268 members. The present membership is 75. He aiso gave thanks to the charter members present for pioneer- the department. There were twenty-one charter members present at the banquet. Terry Haddock of Epworth was recognized as the “Fireman of the Year”. It was stated that the addition of the Epworth group had added a great amount of heip to the department. The charter member traveiing the farthest to get to the banquet was Dewey Jordan who now resides in Wilmington, N. C.
